Manual of Operational Memoranda for Brookhaven College

District Reference: DO,GF No.IV - A
Chapter: PERSONNEL SERVICES
Subject: Non-Smoking and Designated Smoking Areas

Brookhaven College has designated all campus buildings as non-smoking areas. Smoking is permitted anywhere outside except under eaves, overhangs, in vestibules and within 10 feet of doorways. Three covered areas are designated for smoking to give protection from the weather. These are the areas along the north side covered area of S Building, the edge of B Building in the commons Courtyard and at the corner of L Building, juxtaposed to K-Building. There is only one non-covered area where smoking is prohibited. This is in the commons courtyard next to C Building (map on page 3).

The smoking policy applies to all people: to all employees, regardless of classification, to all students, and to all visitors.

Non-Smoking and Designated Smoking Areas

“No Smoking” signs and symbols are clearly posted at the non-smoking campus locations and on the glass of exterior doors to all buildings.

Non-Smoking Signage
  1. If any person observes another individual violating the non-smoking policy within a defined non-smoking area, they may inform the other individual of the policy and call the College Police, ext. 4190, to report the incident
  2. A College Police Officer will reason with and inform the violator of the policy and request that the individual cease smoking.
Policy Enforcement

Should the violator refuse to cease smoking after the campus police officer has informed the violator of the policy, the following will occur:

  1. In the case of an employee, the College Police Officer will issue a report of the violation to both the violator and the violator’s supervisor;
  2. In the case of a student, the College Police Officer will write a report of the violation that will be mailed to the student and submitted to the Executive Vice President of Instruction and Student Support Services;
  3. In the case of a visitor, the Police Officer will escort the violator off campus.
