An instructor’s contractual teaching assignment will normally not exceed fifteen (15) credit hours for lecture classes. Fifteen (15) semester hours has been used as equal to 100% in deriving the figures on this grid. Three (3) laboratory hours are equal to two (2) lecture hours. Catalog and Course Information File figures for lecture and lab hours are the basis for determining the description.

Percentages have been rounded off to the nearest whole number. Lecture hours are reflected in the top row of figures in the grid; lab hours are shown in the left hand vertical column. Combinations are found at the juncture point of the vertical and horizontal columns.

EXAMPLES (per long term semester):

  • A 3 semester hour lecture course = 20%
  • A course with 3 lab hours = 13%
  • A course with 3 lecture and 3 lab hours = 33%

The chart represents one index of faculty load in traditional lecture courses. One of the primary considerations in figuring faculty load is contact hours generated. Exceptions to guidelines may be made by the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Student Success.
