Setting the Bar: A Best Practice

Dear Brookhaven College Community:

As we embark on a new year, I want to take this opportunity to remind you about important safety procedures and communication methods that are currently in place for your safety. Severe weather, tragic shootings and various attacks throughout the country are stark reminders that we must know what to do in worst-case scenarios.

The Brookhaven College Police Department has the following online videos that illustrate how to react in the event of on campus emergencies:

I strongly encourage you to watch these videos as well as review our procedures. There are Emergency Procedures charts in every classroom that brief you on how to react in drills and real threats.

You may know that Brookhaven College implemented the Blackboard emergency notification system several years ago, but that is only part of our emergency communications methods. Please review the information below and become familiar with our communications methods and safety procedures.

  1. Blackboard Emergency System – If you have not done so already, add your text messaging number in eConnect to receive official DCCCD emergency notifications through the Blackboard system. This system is triggered in situations ranging from weather-related closures to police emergencies. Click here for instructions.
  2. Other methods of communications to the Brookhaven College community:
  3. Telephone public address and outdoor speakers (phase II additions-in progress)
  4. Net support messaging – messages pop up on all Brookhaven computer screens
  5. Electronic Marquees at both entrances to the college
  6. College website, as well as Facebook and Twitter accounts
  7. Inclement Weather Hotline – For inclement weather emergencies only, there is a phone line employees can call to receive updates on closures or delays at 972-860-4100. The call-in time assigned to college employees is 5:45-6:15 a.m.
  8. Our Campus, Assessment, Response and Evaluation (CARE) Team is also a great central network focused on preventive and timely intervention before a crisis happens. The CARE Team refers, assesses, responds to, and assists students who display various levels of distressed, disturbed and/or unregulated behavior.
