Acute Care Training For EMTs, Nurses and Physicians
These specialty continuing education courses are offered through Brookhaven College for the certified/licensed, professional health care provider whose primary work is serving patients in acute care settings. The courses are suitable for emergency medical technicians, paramedics, nurses, physicians and other acute care providers. Throughout the year, these courses will vary to include American Heart Association basic, advanced and pediatric life support as well as National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians, NAEMT, courses in Prehospital Trauma Life Support, PHTLS, and Advanced Medical Life Support, AMLS. In addition, we will offer American Academy of Pediatrics courses such as the Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals, PEPP and Texas Department of State Health Services EMS recertification courses.
Standard scheduled course offerings are for the provider level. Instructor-level courses are offered on an as-needed basis. Other courses offered may include EKG interpretation, neonatal resuscitation, the traumatic brain injury and geriatric emergency medical services courses. (CPR) BASIC CARDIAC LIFE SUPPORT, BCLS, FOR HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS • Eligible for Financial Aid
Prerequisites: Student must register, pay and attend the entire class session in order to receive a completion card. The completion card is valid for two years.
This BCLS course teaches adult, child and infant, and one-rescuer CPR and foreign body airway obstruction; adult two-rescuer CPR; and mouth-to-mask/bag-valve-mask, BVM, ventilation. A completion card is issued upon passing a written evaluation and skills performance.

ADVANCED CARDIAC LIFE SUPPORT, ACLS - FAST TRACK • Eligible for Financial Aid
Prerequisites: Must have a current Health Care Provider BCLS (CPR) completion card. It is recommended that registrants be medical, nursing or paramedical personnel who are experienced in all advanced cardiac life support functions. Successful completion of the two-day ACLS course within the last five years is required.
This accelerated course outlines and enhances the theory and skills necessary for professional personnel practicing in critical care units, emergency departments and paramedic ambulances. The instruction establishes a system of protocols for management of the patient experiencing cardiac emergencies. Course consists of lectures, small group presentations and medical application of skills. Students will be evaluated on how they perform in skill situations and must pass a written examination to gain a completion certificate from the American Heart Association.
Supplies: Students MUST have completed all items on the pre-course requirements checklist, included in the study packet, prior to the first class meeting. The study packet is available when you register and the cost is included in tuition.

DENTAL ASSISTING • Eligible for Financial Aid
Prerequisites: Students must have had three doses of Hepatitis B Vaccine prior to registering for this class; ability to read English at 12-grade level; high school diploma or GED.
The Dental Assisting Program is designed to prepare the student to function effectively as an integral member of the dental health care team. Stimulating, fast paced instruction relies heavily on students participation. Course provides classroom instruction and basic clinical assisting skills. During the ten weeks of training, students will learn dental theory and terminology, the techniques of four-handed chairside procedures, exposing and processing dental radiographs or x-rays including an introduction to digital and panoramic radiology. Instruction also covers infection control standards, obtaining impressions of the oral cavity for the fabrication of study models and custom trays used for vital bleaching procedures, preparing dental material, fabrication of provisional coverage. Students will spend time assisting and observing in a participating dental office. The Dental Assisting Program prepares students for the Texas Certification in Radiology, Infection Control and Jurisprudence. One-time tuition covers instruction, materials, textbook and dental supplies and equipment. Clinical labs are conducted at Dental Careers Foundation.
EKG technicians are responsible for performing diagnostic tests to monitor and record the heart rhythm and rate in patients. These tests include basic EKGs, Holter monitoring, 12 lead placement and stress tests. Our comprehensive electrocardiography program prepares students to take the Electrocardiograph, EKG, Technician exam and to function as EKG technicians.
EKG TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION • Eligible for Financial Aid
This course will include important practice and background information on anatomy and physiology of the heart, medical disease processes, medical terminology and ethics, legal aspects of patient contact, the Holter monitor, electrocardiography and echocardiography. The program includes a graded final exam to help prepare students for the NCCT EKG Technician exam.

Food Protection Management Certification
FOOD PROTECTION MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATION • Eligible for Financial Aid
This is a 15-hour training and certification course for people in charge of establishments which prepare and serve food to the public. The accredited program consists of 15 hours of classroom training with a one-hour test. The course includes instruction in proper food storage, sanitary food service preparation, pest control, employee sanitation training, housekeeping management, accident prevention and sanitation regulations and standards. This course complies with the regulations of Dallas, Carrollton, Farmers Branch and many other cities requiring certification. It is structured around the Texas Department of State Health Services Food and Drug Administration rules on food service sanitation.
Supplies: Please bring a #2 pencil with an eraser.

Patient Care Technician Program
This program prepares a student to work as an entry-level patient care technician in a clinic, hospital, nursing home or long-term care facility. Students will learn to perform basic laboratory procedures and electrocardiograms, check vital signs, assist in medical examinations, and how to perform and gain experience in phlebotomy. This program is a combination of lecture and practical exercises in the medical laboratory. Upon successful completion of this program, the student is eligible to take the State of Texas Nurse's Aide Certification exam as well as the National Center for Competency Testing, NCCT, Certification exams for EKG, Phlebotomy and Patient Care Technician.
Patient Care Technician courses may be taken in any order.

Prior to registering for Patient Care Technician, Part One and Three, students also must have had three doses of Hepatitis B Vaccine, current immunizations and a TB Test; Patient Care Technician, Part Three also will require completion of Basic Cardiac Life Support, BCLS, for Health Care Providers, a criminal background check; Nurse Aide Registry verification; and ability to lift 50 lbs.

Students will develop skills in a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and universal precautions. Techniques include vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin puncture, butterfly needles and blood culture and specimen collection from adults, children and infants. The course emphasizes infection prevention, proper patient identification, labeling of specimens and quality assurance, specimen handling, processing and accessioning. Personal Trainer Course and Exam
CERTIFIED PERSONAL TRAINER • Eligible for Financial Aid
Brookhaven College provides an affordable, convenient, comprehensive program for those who want National Federation of Professional Trainers Certification. NFPT certification credentials are internationally recognized. The student will complete an orientation session, 30 hours of course work and a two-hour examination. Upon successful completion of course work and examination, students will be awarded their credentials. The course includes a study of the aspects of one-on-one training including marketing, program development, legal aspects, documentation, training methodologies and business considerations, with an emphasis on the development of safe and enjoyable individualized training sessions.

Pharmacy Technician Certification
PHARMACY TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION PROGRAM • Eligible for Financial Aid
Prerequisites: High school diploma or GED
This comprehensive 50-hour course will prepare students to enter the pharmacy field and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board, PTCB, exam. Pharmacy technicians work in hospitals, home infusion pharmacies, community pharmacies and other health care settings, working under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. Course content includes medical terminology specific to the pharmacy, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Students will learn dosage calculations, I.V. flow rates, drug compounding, dose conversions, prescription dispensation, inventory control, billing and reimbursement. Financial aid is available.

The 96-hour Phlebotomy Technician Program prepares professionals to collect blood specimens from clients for laboratory analysis. Students will become familiar with all aspects of blood collection and develop comprehensive skills to perform venipunctures competently and safely. Classroom work includes terminology; anatomy; physiology; blood collection procedures; specimen hands-on practice; and, clinical training in skills and techniques to perform puncture methods. The program also includes lab exercises. Students will work with a training arm and other exercises intended to prepare them to function as entry-level phlebotomy technicians. The curriculum is designed to provide the educational information and competencies required by the National Center for Competency Testing, NCCT, for certification as a Phlebotomy Technician.
PHLEBOTOMY TECHNICIAN • Eligible for Financial Aid
Prerequisites: Online registration is not available for this course. Registration for this course MUST be done in person. Students must have completed health records with current immunizations, a tuberculosis test, and three doses of Hepatitis B vaccine; and high school diploma or the equivalent.
Students will develop skills in a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and universal precautions. Techniques include vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin puncture, butterfly needles and blood culture and specimen collection from adults, children and infants. The course emphasizes infection prevention, proper patient identification, labeling of specimens and quality assurance, specimen handling, processing and accessioning. Topics include professionalism, ethics and medical terminology.
