Artists Van Der Wege and Merrill Exhibit with Brookhaven College School of the Arts

Release Date Feb. 19

DALLAS—The Brookhaven College Art Department is pleased to present exhibitions by Robertus Joost van der Wege in the Forum Gallery and Leigh Merrill in the Studio Gallery of the Brookhaven College School of the Arts from Feb. 12-March 5.

Robertus Joost van der Wege: Velo Dreams exhibits a transformation of casual bicycles into a unique collection of sculpture. The bicycles, free-standing as well as adorning the walls, are repurposed as sculptural metaphors targeting human relations and cultural concerns for the environment. Van der Wege received a Bachelor of Arts from Western Michigan University, a Master of Arts from the University of Hawaii-Manoa and a Master of Fine Arts from Northern Illinois University.

Leigh Merrill produces photographs of the urban landscape positioned between reality and fantasy. Digitally reassembled from photographs of the ordinary structures of urban life, her works reiterate the constructed, fragmentary, built environment. Merrill's work has exhibited in galleries throughout the United States including the Phoenix Art Museum, the diRosa Art Preserve, The Lawndale Art Center, Women and Their Work Gallery, the Tremaine Gallery, and the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art. Merrill participated in the 2011 Fotographia Festival Internazionale di Roma at the Galleria Gallerati in Rome, Italy. Her work is part of the permanent collections at the Museum of Texas Tech University, the City of Phoenix and the California Institute of Integral Studies, as well as part of private collections. Merrill received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of New Mexico and a Master of Fine Arts from Mills College.

A reception for the artists will be in their respective galleries Feb. 22, 4-6 p.m.
