Brookhaven College Earns Tree Campus USA Designation
Release Date Feb. 26
Brookhaven College is now a Tree Campus USA. Tree Campus USA is an Arbor Day Foundation program that recognizes college and university campuses for effective management of their trees.
Brookhaven College is only the 10th college/university in Texas to receive this designation. The campus - marked by mature native trees, lush lawns and courtyards, and bounded on two sides by a wild thicket and creek - is regarded by employees and students as one of the colleges most treasured features. As a Tree Campus, the college has made a formal commitment to maintaining and developing a healthy, attractive and sustainable urban forest.
Being recognized as a Tree Campus USA acknowledges the schools commitment of resources to protect and enhance its urban forest and raise awareness of the importance of trees to the college - and to the planet. When applying for the Tree Campus designation, the college developed a cross-functional campus tree advisory committee. The committee gathered information and set out specific plans for sustaining the urban forest at the college with a formal Tree Care Plan.
Students in the colleges geospatial technology program undertook service-learning projects first to build a map that sets out information about the tree canopy within three landscape zones of the campus using state of the art remote sensing technology. Other students conducted an inventory of the trees in the colleges high use zones, and future plans include building a comprehensive inventory of the trees on campus.
