Students Reach Out and Remember Virginia Tech

students reach out to Virginia Tech

Students and employees came together at the flagpoles for a memorial service April 19 held for the students and staff killed at Virginia Tech. Staff from the Courier, Student Government Association, Amnesty International, Christian Collegiate Ministries and Phi Theta Kappa gathered to prepare black ribbons and ready candles for those who attended the memorial. Student leaders gathered and read the names of those who were killed.

Praveen Sathianathan, Christina Garza and other students took turns reading the names as well as a tidbit about each person's background, hopes and dreams. Students came forward to share their own stories of loss and offer their support to those who are hurting at Virginia Tech.

Before a brief prayer, Claude Caffee, vice president for student development, thanked all of the students and employees who came to remember and to share. Caffee told those assembled that “one of the things I have noticed about Brookhaven College students is that they rise to the occasion.”

In addition to the memorial service, student government and the Courier staff are gathering signatures and notes in a scrapbook. For the next week, anyone who has a thought to share or wants to offer support can go to the Student Programs And Resources Office and add to a scrapbook and banner that are being prepared to send to Virginia Tech.
