BHC receives grant from TWC

The Dallas area workforce will benefit from a $272,196 job-training grant from the Skills Development Fund that the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) administers. Brookhaven College has partnered with Source Inc. to provide the training for workers.

Ronnie Congleton, Texas Workforce Commissioner representing Labor, visited Brookhaven College to present a $272,196 check to Dr. Sharon L. Blackman, college president, for skills training courses for Source Inc. The corporation is one of the nation’s largest premier providers of network communication systems. Bob Phelps, mayor of Farmers Branch, also was in attendance.

In partnership with Brookhaven College, the grant will fund training for 205 employees at the Source’s Farmers Branch facility. Training will be provided for 16 new employees and 189 current employees ranging from accounting clerks, customer support specialists, managers and technicians, to engineers and warehouse staff. Training topics include sales, project management, CISCO certifications, English for Speakers of Other Languages and quality assurance. Upon completion of training, workers can earn an average hourly wage of $28.45.

“I am proud of the efforts put forth by Source Inc. and Brookhaven College to help workers get specialized training,” State Sen. Florence Shapiro said. “I have always been a proponent of the public-private partnership, and this instance is a perfect example of such synergy. The creation of 16 new jobs and the training for 189 incumbent workers in jobs paying competitive wages will prove to have a positive ripple effect across our community and state.”
