Preparing for Citizenship Focus for New College Course

Students Prepare for Citizenship

Citizenship for legal residents is at the core of a new course and a new partnership at Brookhaven College. The Corporate and Continuing Education Division added a new course this summer, U.S.A. Citizenship, to meet the needs of Dallas’ portion of the more than 800,000 legal residents in Texas who are eligible to apply for U.S. citizenship.

The college also has joined the “Ya Es Hora Ciudadania!” Campaign. “Ya Es Hora Ciudadania!” is a national campaign focused on informing, educating and motivating the more than 8 million legal permanent residents living in the United States who are eligible to apply for U.S. citizenship.

The new citizenship course at Brookhaven College will offer information about the process for becoming a United States citizen. Two classes in U.S.A. Citizenship began June 18, and offer information about the process for becoming a citizen and provide extra preparation for the citizenship interview.

Across the country, Ya Es Hora Ciudadania! is reporting an increase in the applications for citizenship. They attribute the increased interest to a desire to take part in the ongoing political discussions about immigration. In addition, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, USCIS, has requested an increase to the naturalization fee and is testing a new civics and language exam it will implement nationwide in the spring of 2008.
