Professor Chooses Boulder Over Tree

Susan Maxey

Walk into the K-building from the center of the campus. Look out over the railing through the opposite window wall. You will see my 25-year rock. I teach geology, so I wanted a rock, not a tree.

It is a 3,600 pound granite boulder, approximately 1.3 billion years old. There is a spectacular black intrusion which cuts across it. It is from a Martin-Marietta quarry near Mill Creek, Okla. and is my longevity rock, as well as a spectacular teaching specimen. My husband, who also helped develop the Troutt Family Geology Walk on the perimeter of the UNT Environmental Science Building, arranged and paid for the transportation from Oklahoma to the Brookhaven College campus as my birthday present. Jim Dwyer, director of facilities management, and his crew helped in the placement and installation.

25-year rock

This represents the first of several acquisitions, I hope, to place exotic rocks around the campus/jogging trail for educational experiences for very young geologists and more advanced students. It’s really quite exciting!
