For Immediate Release

Handling the busy and demanding front office for a medical office requires special skills and abilities. Brookhaven College is the first in the Dallas County Community College District to add a group of credit courses that are meant to prepare students for this career.
A group of five courses, recognizing the essential skills needed for medical front office, will begin this fall semester. The college added the program to meet a local need in the community and to meet student needs and requests for this training. The medical office courses consist of Medical Terminology, Medical Office Procedures, Medical Software Applications, Medical Coding Basics and Medical Insurance.
The program was designed to improve the proficiency of those working in a medical office or prepare those with strong office skills for the medical environment. Medical office receptionists and medical secretaries have become more and more interested in crossing over into career paths that include coding or billing specialist, medical assistant, office manager or practice manager. The courses in the series can be taken for credit as part of the Business Office Systems and Support program, as an individual program of courses, or to enhance an associate degree program. The courses also are available through the Workforce and Continuing Education Division, for students who are interested in workforce training. Both options have financial aid available for students.
The curriculum represents a collaborative effort between the college's credit and noncredit programs to schedule courses, utilize faculty and provide students options depending their needs. Sharon Burton, office technology professor, coordinated the request to add this program in her role within new program development.
Information sessions will explain the new program, July 19, Aug. 8 and 20 at 5:30 p.m. in Building M, Room M122.
