The Metrocrest Medical Foundation made another generous contribution to the Stuart Peake Scholarship Fund for Brookhaven College’s Radiologic Technology Program. Christie Carter, radiologic technology professor, and Juanita Zapata Flint, executive dean for the Health and Human Services, accepted the $12,870 check on June 26. To date the foundation has donated $85,800, supporting 20 students in the Radiologic Technology Program since January 2004. Dr. Stuart Peake, a radiologist at RHD Memorial Medical Center, for whom the scholarship is named, presented the check along with Jeanne Fritsche from Metrocrest Medical Foundation.
Representatives from Head Start of Greater Dallas were at Brookhaven College in June and July to encourage students to consider enrolling their children in the Brookhaven Head Start Center. The center is scheduled to open Aug. 20 and is currently accepting applications. Head Start offers free, high-quality, child care to low-income families. Parents of Head Start students will have access to scholarship funds, contributed by the Greater Texas Foundation, to take courses at the college.
A team from Brookhaven College participated in the League for Innovation Learning College Summit in late June in Dallas. President Sharon L. Blackman was a panelist for the “Quality Enhancement” session. Joining her at the conference for sessions on quality, learning outcomes assessment, student engagement, learning environments, and professional development were Vernon Hawkins, Joy Bailey, Thomas Anderson, Jamie Jenkins, Marie Maness, Rodger Bennett, Linda Lee, Mary Brumbach and Aaron Ostrom . Rodger Bennett, executive dean for the School of the Arts, presented a session on “Creating an Exceptional Teaching and Learning Environment.” The session showed participants how to create continuous improvement in a teaching and learning environment, and helped them identify and create the best teaching and learning practices and initiatives that can be connected to instructional planning. Participants engaged in identifying and prioritizing “what the best college teachers do” and created sample teaching initiatives using the lists.
Brookhaven College sent a team to New Orleans, June 21-23, for a regional workshop on the recruitment and retention of students. P. Teresa Farnum, principal of Teresa Farum and Associates, formerly of Noel-Levitz and a former college mathematics professor, presented sessions on retention strategies, creation of a retention plan and retention of adult learners. Also addressed at the conference were principles of general recruitment, recruitment of adult learners and financial aid. Representatives from the college were Adrien Cuellar-McGuire, humanities professor, Becky Knickel, accounting professor, Aaron Ostrom, executive dean, Monica Taliaferro, director for marketing and public information, and Teri Walker, dean of institutional effectiveness. Teresa Farnum is known as “your change agent to recruit and graduate students” and is based in Englewood, Colo.
