Notes from the PSSA

MISSION STATEMENT

The PSSA exists to enhance the overall work environment of the Brookhaven College Professional Support Staff, assist the student body through scholarships and other endeavors and work to uphold the image of Brookhaven College in general.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR MEMBERS

Several of our PSSA members and Friends of the PSSA have been promoted. Their change in titles has been recognized elsewhere but, because they are PSSA/FOTP members, we are using this forum to congratulate them once again.

NEW PSSA MEMBERS & FRIENDS OF THE PSSA

Our new membership drive for the upcoming year has just begun; therefore we will temporarily dispense with listing new PSSA members and Friends of the PSSA; a complete roster will be made available at the end of the membership drive.

If you are not a PSSA member or a Friend of the PSSA, you are encouraged to join. Interested individuals should stop by Room S072 and, after paying the $5 dues, Mildred Kelley will add you to the membership roll.

EVENTS

PSSA lunch

On Sept. 12, the PSSA had a lunch to commence the 2007-08 membership drive. The membership committee was pleased to welcome back many of the previous year’s members and was gratified to see many new members in attendance.

In addition to a large turn out by the professional support staff, our campus leadership was well represented and we are most grateful for their attendance and support.

A drawing was held for several prizes which included, among various items, a Sprouts gift card and two one-month reserved parking spaces. While most of the winners were from the ranks of the professional support staff, George Herring, vice president of Business Services, was lucky enough to walk away with some prize literature provided by members of Brookhaven’s senior adults. Even though the publication is filled with excellent original writings, Herring seemed a bit disappointed that there was a lack of numbers and he was heard to say, “…perhaps if I put all the nouns in one column and all the adjectives in another … .”

The food consisted of various sorts of excellent sandwiches, chips, cookies and drinks and all attendees went away well fed. In addition to the food, it was fun to visit with friends and colleagues in a festive and relaxed atmosphere.

Very special thanks are extended to the wonderful PSSA members that planned and implemented the gathering; they are Mildred Kelley , our Membership Committee chairperson, Susan Osgood, Julie Hanson, Lois Wagenseil, Jamie Jenkins and Evonne Clark. As most all of us know, these individuals are always willing to assist the PSSA and the PSSA is indeed grateful. Because of their work, the membership drive has gotten off to an excellent start and it is noteworthy that the committee members had fun working together which is a side benefit of the giving of one’s self.

MEETINGS AND OTHER BUSINESS

The PSSA is currently offering a chance to win a long-term reserved parking space. For your name to be placed in the drawing you will need to donate $5 to the PSSA. The drawing will be held at the October PSSA monthly meeting and the parking spot will be available beginning Nov. 1 through May 31, 2008. The lucky winner will choose where the sign is placed and they will then be oblivious to the winter elements and the full parking lots. More details will be made available via campus fliers.

The next monthly PSSA meeting is scheduled for noon on Oct. 24 and the location is to be announced. Other planned events include the annual bake sale and the December holiday celebration. Stay tuned for more details; better yet, attend the monthly PSSA meetings.

Our membership continues to grow and we encourage the membership and active involvement of all professional support staff.
