Notes from the PSSA

MISSION STATEMENT

The PSSA exists to enhance the overall work environment of the Brookhaven College Professional Support Staff, assist the student body through scholarships and other endeavors and work to uphold the image of Brookhaven College in general.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR MEMBERS

Additional PSSA members have been promoted and they warrant our congratulations.

Edeleu Florendo has accepted the position of academic advisor I. She comes to the Advising Center from Brookhaven College East where she worked in the Workforce and Continuing Education Division. Congratulations to you, Edeleu.

Terry Black of the Information Technology Department has recently been promoted to information systems/LAN support specialist IV. Terry’s name was inadvertently left out of the previous PSSA submission.

CONGRATULATIONS AND RECOGNITION TO OUR MEMBERS’ FAMILIES

Carrie Schweitzer

David Holiner, grandson of Harlan Holiner, recently won the tennis National Open in Lexington, Ky. David is 16 years old and is currently ranked No. 10 in the 16-and-under category of the U.S. Tennis Association listings. He is a sophomore at Spring Creek Academy in Plano and is being aggressively recruited by various universities. His near term ambition is to play for a Division 1 university and later on he hopes to play professional tennis. Congratulations to you, David.

Emma Schweitzer, daughter of our beloved Carrie Schweitzer, FOTP, is one of eight middle school students selected to attend the Universal Forum of Cultures Peace Camp 2007. The event is funded by UNESCO and is sponsored locally by the DISD, the City of Dallas and the World Affairs Council. This honor will take Emma to Monterrey, Mexico, during the period Oct. 15-26, where she will be joining another 79 students from around the world. Emma, we know this is a great opportunity and the PSSA congratulates you!

On Oct. 19, Dawn McCoy, daughter of Clarice McCoy, FOTP, an aspiring country and western singer will perform at the Episcopal School of Dallas’ homecoming, her high school alma mater. We will ask Clarice to report back with a critique.

SPECIAL UPDATE

A former PSSA member, Lynn Tankersley, has asked to renew her membership as an ex-patriot member and she submitted the requisite dues. Lynn sends her regards to the Brookhaven College community and said that during her time here she was impressed with the PSSA and her membership made her feel more a part of the college community. She said she really enjoyed the camaraderie that membership offered and remembered with fondness her participation in the bake and flower sales. Most of us remember Lynn from her tenure in the Career Development Center; she also was featured in the PSSA section of the March 28 Courtyard Chatter. If one wants to read Lynn’s profile, you may do so by accessing the Courtyard Chatter archives.

NEW PSSA MEMBERS & FRIENDS OF THE PSSA

Our new membership drive for the upcoming year is in “full swing;” therefore, we will continue to dispense temporarily with listing new PSSA members and Friends of the PSSA; a complete roster will be made available at the end of the membership drive. Our current membership participation for the new 2007-08 membership drive stands at 55 percent. At the end of last year’s membership drive our participation rate was 65 percent; our goal this year is 90 percent and our Membership Committee believes this goal can be reached.

It is noteworthy to add that the PSSA’s “Friends of the PSSA” initiative is gaining traction and the PSSA is very grateful to the support shown by the faculty and administrators.

If you are not a PSSA member or a Friend of the PSSA, you are encouraged to join. Interested individuals should stop by Room S072 and, after paying the $5 dues, Mildred Kelley will add you to the membership roll.

MEMBER PROFILE

There have been several queries asking why the “Member Profile” section has not appeared in that last couple of issues. For those that have inquired, the intent is for this feature to be reintroduced soon.

EVENTS

Planned special events include the annual bake sale and the December holiday celebration.

Last year’s bake sale was the most successful of all the PSSA bake sales. Part of this success has been attributed to allowing persons to preorder cakes and pies to ensure availability. Two other reasons that weigh mightily in the event’s success include:

  1. Jamie Jenkins’ cream pies and
  2. Arlene Pike’s pumpkin pies
Arlene’s secret is that she started from “scratch” which included peeling and cooking whole pumpkins—no canned mix for her!

The PSSA is currently offering a chance to win a long-term reserved parking space. For your name to be placed in the drawing you will need to donate $5 to the PSSA. The drawing will be held at the October PSSA monthly meeting. The parking spot will be valid from Nov. 1 through May 31, 2008. The lucky winner can choose where the sign is placed and they will then be oblivious to the winter elements and the full parking lots. More details will be made available via campus fliers.

Please note that the drawing is open to all professional support staff, faculty, administrators and students.

In the near future, the professional support staff will be encouraged to apply for the annual PSSEC scholarship award. Any PSS employee who is taking college-level courses is eligible to apply. Julie Hanson was last year’s recipient. Watch for details.

MEETINGS AND OTHER BUSINESS

The next monthly PSSA meeting is scheduled for noon on Oct. 24 in Room H125. Other planned events include the annual bake sale and the December holiday celebration. Stay tuned for more details; better yet, attend the monthly PSSA meetings.

If you are unable to attend a meeting, please read the minutes that are distributed by Hannah Love.

Our membership continues to grow and we encourage the membership and active involvement of all professional support staff.
