“Portraits of Courage” Celebrates African-American History

Portraits of Courage

More than 100 students and employees enjoyed “Portraits of Courage,” on Jan. 29. Created by noted, award-winning playwright and diversity expert, Colin Cox, “Portraits of Courage,” examines the lives of overlooked African-Americans and their contributions to American history.

Set with single figures on a stark stage, the characters told their individual stories as the six different figures from African-American history. From activist Ida B. Wells, to commander of the 9th Cavalry Colonel Young, to entrepreneur C.J. Walker, the audience met a variety African-Americans who impacted America.

The program, a two-person show, was part of the college’s celebration of African-American History Month. Surprised at the absence of African-American figures in today’s history books, playwright Colin Cox created a theatrical piece to help bring recognition to a few of those who have helped shaped our country. Cox is co-author of the nationally acclaimed “Faces of America” and “American Voices.”
