Students Participate in Conversation About Future Core Requirements

Students Participate

Brookhaven College students had a chance to help shape the future of the Core Curriculum at an open forum on Jan. 28. About 40 students participated in the opportunity to learn more about the Core 2009 process and offer their input. Professor Becki Williams, who teaches chemistry at Richland College, gave the students an overview of the Core project and showed the Did You Know/Shift Happens video to help get the conversation started.

Three questions were posed to the students for discussion and their responses were recorded for consideration by the DCCCD Core 2009 committee.

  1. What skills do you need to be successful?
  2. What is important for you to learn from core courses? What are the big ideas you need to study and consider?
  3. How can the DCCCD (or your college) help you achieve your goals?

The students had a variety of answers to the questions, but many focused on the necessity of learning to think for themselves, obtaining skills to communicate and interact with diverse people and being able to solve problems on their own. Read the summary of answers students gave to each of the questions to learn more.

The Core 2009 committee is a group of 14 faculty members and two administrators from diverse disciplines, representing all seven of the DCCCD colleges. The committee’s charges include the examination of the existing DCCCD Core Curriculum. The Core 2009 committee has been asked to consider what students in 2009 and beyond will need to know and be able to do when they complete the DCCCD Core Curriculum. Brookhaven College's representatives on the committee are Hazel Carlos, Communications Division, and Mary Jackson, Mathematics and Science Division.

Students and employees are encouraged to add their input about the Core to the Suggestion Box on the Core 2009 Web page.
