Community Service Projects Bring College to Community

Community Service

From building fences to digging ditches, college employees as well as students worked this past weekend to help a few Carrollton and Farmers Branch senior citizens to have safer, cleaner yards. For several weeks, a committee has been lining up volunteers to assist local seniors with a variety of odd jobs.

On April 12, six teams traveled to different homes in the college’s service-area to complete a variety of work. The Hispanic Heritage and Society of Advancement of Management clubs each took on a project and four other teams were filled with employees. The All-college Community Service committee's project was the Group Home Repair Program in partnership with Senior Adult Services, which is a MetroCrest Social Services agency.

Adrien Cuellar-McGuire, Rodger Bennett, Lynne Levesque, Nita Drescher, Marisa Walsdorf and Claire Bambrough each headed a team. Simple home repairs, complex landscaping, tree trimming and improving drainage were just a few of the tasks the teams undertook. This is the first time the college has volunteered in the local community this way.

There are other teams that will be working at homes this coming weekend so if you are still interested in taking part in the project contact Aaron Ostrom or Marisa Walsdorf to see if there are still volunteer opportunities.
