
Students in dual credit programs at area high schools in partnership with the college have been earning a variety of honors this year. From music to medical programs, the students have competed at regional and state levels to earn honors.
Two dual credit students in the college’s Emergency Medical Technician Program earned regional honors and will move onto the state competition. Bilal Master and Lindsey Holder, competed at the area level for Health Occupations Students of America, HOSA, Feb. 23-24. The two students, who are in the dual credit program through R.L. Turner High School, earned first place and will be advancing to the state competition in Austin in April.
There were nine emergency medical technician students recognized at the 2008 Annual Student Recognition Reception for R. L. Turner High School. The students have taken the dual credit EMT program taught by Jason Thornton, EMS professor. Juanita Z. Flint, executive dean of Health and Human Services Division, attended the 2008 Annual Student Recognition Reception on April 7. Flint serves as a member of the advisory board for the R. L. Turner Academy of Biomedical Professions. More than 300 people attended the reception at the Hackberry Creek County Club.
Dual credit accounting students from Brookhaven College and Creekview High School took top awards at the District 6-5A University Interscholastic League accounting competition. Yong Kim won first place and Eduardo Valdes won fifth place in the individual competitions. As a team Yong, Eduardo and Marco Avila took second place in the team competition. Yong advanced to the regional competition in Lubbock and Eduardo has told his instructor that he plans to continue with Accounting 2 next year. The University Interscholastic League offers the most comprehensive literary and academic competitive program in the nation.

Roy Allen
Roy Allen, music professor, traveled with several students to the Texas Music Educators Association Convention in San Antonio, Feb. 13-16. Two high school saxophone players who are enrolled in the Brookhaven Chamber Ensemble and private lesson program were selected for the Texas 5A All-State Symphonic Band. Chris Rezeznik, a junior from Hebron High School, made first chair alto saxophonist—thus being rated the “best” high school classical alto saxophonist in the state of Texas. Dennis Liang, a senior from L.V. Berkner High School, made fifth chair alto saxophonist.
College students took awards at this competition as well with Michael Easton, Brookhaven College freshman, chosen as second chair alto saxophonist in the final audition for the all-state TMEA Symphonic Band. Daniel Cortez, another freshman, earned the first chair for tenor saxophone.
