Journalism Students Win at TIPA

Journalism

The Brookhaven Courier has done it again, bringing home a long list of awards from the most recent Texas Intercollegiate Press Association convention. Larie Engles, student publications manager, and five journalism students traveled to College Station, Texas, on April 3-5 for the recent event. Scott Figuerola, editor; Nadia Galindo, managing editor; Chris Vivero, photo editor; Samantha Nickel, layout editor; and Kristin McKenzie, copy editor, attended the convention.

In addition to the 17 awards that staff members received, Nadia was selected at the convention to receive one of four $400 Mike Warms scholarships for two-year community college students. Sandy Wyche, interim dean for business studies, thanked Larie with a quick note, “I appreciate the good work you do for the students and the college. It is a pleasure to have you in the Business Studies Division.”

First place awards went to Glen Sovian for news feature story, Chris Vivero for feature photo and Samantha Nickel for information graphic. Second place awards went to Adam Asmar for news photo, Scott Figuerola for sports column, Samantha Nickel for page one design and Jack Pausman for sports action photo. Third place awards went to Latifa Bammou for general column, Nadia and Chris for sports page design and Chris again for editorial cartoon.

In addition, honorable mentions were given to Scott for news story, to Nadia Galindo for feature story, to Samantha Nickel for illustration, to Samantha and Chris for picture story, to Jose Rodriguez for critical review, to Glen for in-depth reporting and Chris again for headline.

“These recognitions are testimony to the outstanding instructional and out-of-class assistance received by these students,” wrote Richard McCrary, vice president for learning and student success. “Each of you involved in the teaching of these students is to be congratulated for your fine work and dedication to student success. Thank you for all that you do each and every day to ensure our students have such positive learning experiences.”
