Long-time Faculty Celebrated at Retirement

Bob Stock

Friends and colleagues gathered to say farewells to three long-time employees who are retiring, or will be someday. Charles McAdams, Bob Stock and Marjorie Westberry are each beginning a phased retirement.

Charles McAdams, humanities professor, missed the celebration, deciding instead to spend the day with his grandchildren according to Sharon L. Blackman, president of Brookhaven College. Dr. Blackman said a few words about her relationship and experiences with each of the retirees before handing over the microphone to those who had worked more closely with them.

Rodger Bennett, executive dean for the School of the Arts, Physical Education, Athletics and Nutrition, spoke about both Charles and Bob Stock, physical education professor. Rodger shared Charles’ previous attempts to cut back his workload, after Charles served as interim dean. The attempts were less than successful with Charles developing first flex-courses and then online courses for humanities before adding cultural studies courses.

Bob is one of the founding faculty members of Brookhaven College, transferring from Eastfield College. Bob has lead successful intramural teams at colleges throughout the district. He also has lead the physical education, athletics and nutrition portion of the larger division.

Along with Bob, Marjorie was one of the original faculty members. Kendra Vaglienti, executive dean of communications, told those gathered that Marjorie has been a leader in her division and a strong advocate for students. An advocate for service-learning, Marjorie has a near 100 percent retention rate in her courses.

If you missed the party, you should still have opportunities to say farewells to the retirees. Each will be taking the phased retirement and will be teaching courses throughout the next year or more.
