This year’s art sale filled tables in the Student Services Center last week. Edeleu Florendo, academic advisor, and Ghada Mohsene, department assistant in Student Programs And Resources, were just two of the many who browsed the sale. Each year, students in ceramics, printmaking, painting, jewelry making, sculpture, drawing and photography courses sell pieces they have created to benefit the Art Club. Funds go to support the student scholarships that are given at the Student Scholarship Reception. This year’s winners were Christine Kim, Emerald Monroe and Sihyun Roh.

A class of English 1301 students celebrated the end of the spring semester with an author party during finals week. As their final project for the semester each student put the writing skills they mastered during the class to good use and created their own book, complete with cover and dust jacket. Professor Jane Cross said the students selected their own topics and were required not only to write their books, but also to illustrate them. Topics included a broad array of subjects including “Easy Cooking with Billy,” “Potty Training for Mothers of Toddlers,” “Little Bear’s Feather,” and books about seeking freedom Vietnam and the quest of one student to find her father she had never known. During the author party students shared their books and some food with the rest of the class.

Brookhaven College was the host site for a special Learning Styles Academy on April 17-18. The workshops, focusing on learning styles, brain-based and accelerated learning, were facilitated by Donna Willingham of Tomball College and Jose Baltazar of El Paso Community College. Instructors from throughout the district, as well as others from Del Mar College and Tyler Junior College, attended the two-day event. The workshop was funded by the THECB, through Carl D. Perkins Grants, as part of the Texas Professional Development Project for Texas Community College Faculty.
