“Always smiling,” “always helpful” and “always friendly” were re-occuring themes at a series of thank you festivities on April 30. Four college employees and one bookstore employee were the recipients of a special thank you from a Speech class.
Though Officer Walter Hannah ended up being out sick that day. He was the first on the list of those scheduled for a surprise. Elizabeth Whatley, adjunct speech professor, asked her classes to think about doing a random act of kindness and to vote for someone at the college who has made a difference to them as a student. The plan had been to surprise Walter when he came to open their “locked” classroom door.
Arthur Davila, department assistant in the Testing Center, was the next due for a surprise. Students presented him with signs and other thank yous in the Student Services Center lobby near the advising desk. Juanita Beck, who works part-time in advising, also was selected for a thank you from students, but was not working that day.
The same class also chose Michael Adams from Follett’s Bookstore. Small gifts and tokens of thanks were given by the students as they thanked Michael for his kindness and great customer service.

Tim Johnson, department assistant for advising, was surprised with posters, cupcakes and a special gold tie with hand-written thank yous. From helping students find specific rooms on campus to always wearing a tie, various students told Tim why they appreciated his work and how his contribution made a difference in their college experience.
