Just in time for the election year, the School of the Arts will bring Capitol Steps to share their satire and comedy for the fall spotlight performance. Capitol Steps started as a group of legislative staffers preparing a skit for the office holiday party. It has grown to include 28 albums, television and radio performances and more than 4,500 live shows around the country. Capitol Steps will appear at the Performance Hall, Sept. 5 at 8 p.m.
A review in The Washington Times called the Capitol Steps, “the best musical satire on Washington I’ve ever seen!” Capital Steps has been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC and PBS, and can be heard four times a year on National Public Radio stations nationwide during their Politics Takes a Holiday radio specials. The Wall Street Journal said Capitol Steps’ “political satire brings chuckles … rave reviews … guffaws…and bipartisan grins all around. The satire hits the mark.”

No political party is safe from the satirical song parodies and skits. The program is always evolving to keep up with current events. Most of the various cast members have worked on Capitol Hill; some for Democrats, some for Republicans, and others for politicians who firmly straddle the fence. Says Elaina Newport, one of the original cast members, “typically the Republicans goof up, and the Democrats party. Then the Democrats goof up and the Republicans party. That's what we call the two-party system.”
Tickets for spotlight events are available three weeks prior to the performance. Prices for floor seating are $30 for adults, $25 for senior adults and DCCCD staff and students. Balcony seating is $20 for adults, $15 for senior adults, DCCCD staff and students. Group rates are available.
