This fall, Follett Bookstore continued its support of student success through a generous investment in education at Brookhaven College. This support comes in the form of a donation of a $7,000 allocation of Follett gift cards for the 2008-2009 academic year.
The President’s Cabinet decided to split these funds through the Faculty Association’s book fund and direct financial aid to students. Through the efforts of Nancy Barlow, who oversees the Faculty Association’s book fund, $5,000 of the allocation will be used to purchase books that will be placed in the library for student use. The remaining $2,000 will be awarded directly to students through the Scholarships/Financial Aid Office.
The PCAB, along with Nancy, decided to spread the donation over several semesters. For the fall semester, $2,000 was distributed to the Faculty Association and $1,000 was distributed directly to students. The balance of $4,000 will be distributed during the coming spring and summer semesters.
A few examples of the books purchased by the Faculty Association for loan to students through course reserve are: History 1301 and 1302: The United States Volumes 1 and 2; English 1301 and 1302: Writing in the Works; Developmental Math 0098 and 0099: Beginning and Intermediate Algebra; Humanities 1302: Creative Impulse; Psychology 2314: The Developing Person through the Lifespan. These books were recommended for purchase as textbooks that should be used for the next three years and available on reserve to students in these courses. Course reserve means that students can check out these textbooks with their student I.D. for an hour at a time for use in the library.
