Play Premiere Has Brookhaven College Connection

Play Premiere Has Brookhaven College Connection

John M. Flores, reference librarian and playwright, has just had his Dallas premiere. As a reference librarian, he helps connect students with resources to research, create, develop and complete assignments for their courses. A considerable number of their assignments focus specifically on the analysis, criticism and appreciation of literature and drama, which just so happens to be an area of expertise for John.

John has a love of arts and literature so it is no surprise to learn that he has been an active theater artist in the Dallas community for the past 15 years. He also is a company member of the nationally recognized Kitchen Dog Theater, and has worked extensively with the Shakespeare Festival of Dallas for the past six years.

What may be surprising, is that earlier this year John was commissioned by Vanessa Mercado-Taylor of LimeHouse Theater in Ohio to write a play based on the life and paintings of Salvador Dali. As a result, The Hallucinogenic Toreador was born and later had its international premiere at the 2008 Prague Fringe Festival over the summer where it received rave reviews.

Named “One of the Top 5 Must-See Shows” at the 2008 Prague Fringe Festival, The Hallucinogenic Toreador later had its North American premiere in October, where it was welcomed with sold out performances.

But what exactly is it, you ask? The Hallucinogenic Toreador is “the spontaneous, instantaneous and deliriously impossible exploration of Salvador Dali’s most autobiographical painting. Among an assemblage of Venus de Milos, swarming flies and exploding bulls’ heads lies the secret, hidden, hallucinatory history of Dali’s fascinatingly fragmented and fractured Life in Art.” And now, John is exited to announce that Dali is coming to Dallas! The Dallas premiere of The Hallucinogenic Toreador is a collaboration between LimeHouse Theater and Project X: Theatre. Performances are at The Green Zone, Project X: Studio, Dec. 10-13 and tickets are just $10 at the door. For more information, call 214-421-2400 or 817-437-7407. Or, you could call John at ext. 4877, or stop by the Learning Resources Center in Building L.

* John, himself, is a product of the Dallas County Community College District, having attended both Eastfield and Richland colleges in the past and is extremely happy to be part of the Brookhaven family, being able to offer his own personal and professional insights into the realm of literature and drama.
