With our current economic climate, more students 50+ are expected to enter community colleges. We anticipate a continuing growth of this student population at Brookhaven College and to include this wider age range of student in our program, we are changing our name from the Senior Adult Education Program to the Students 50+ Program.

The Students 50+ Department consists of Janice Groeneman, coordinator of client management, and DeBorah Whaley-Stephenson, senior adult student advisor. Janice and DeBorah work as a team to provide services to students. They strive to do this professionally, with quality driven products (courses, seminars, lectures, travel, student club, etc.) that pinpoint and meet the students’ needs.

Our vision is to increase our program's offerings to include all aspects of the educational experience, from courses that give one the knowledge, skills and abilities to succeed in professional, educational and vocational pursuits to courses that increase the student's quality of life. Just as we have helped senior adults through the registration process, we will assist those students who are changing careers or adding skills courses to learn which credit or continuing education programs on our campus meet their needs and how they can get registered.

Our strategic goals involve the following: growth, marketing and program development. We will continue to work with the Marketing and Public Information Office to promote our programs as well as meeting individually with area businesses to acquaint them with services for students 50+ as well as existing campus courses, certificates and degrees. We also will explore with both credit divisions and continuing education the option of cross-listing selected courses in the Students 50+ schedule.

Janice and DeBorah will continue to collaborate with the campus to offer a variety of courses and activities, and I encourage you to contact them with suggestions that you may have to enrich the experience of these students. We thank all of you for your support and are looking forward to some exciting and challenging times with our Students 50+ Program.
