Grant Funds Employee Training Through Brookhaven College

The Texas Workforce Commission presented Brookhaven College with a $218,999 grant to provide training for Air System Components, Inc. at a small reception Jan. 22. The grant is funded through the TWC’s Skills Development Fund, which supports customized training programs designed to add new jobs and improve job skills for incumbent workers.

“Community colleges are in a unique position in being able quickly to adapt to the training needs of our local businesses,” said Richard D. McCrary, Ed.D., executive vice president and chief instructional officer. “These grants allow us to create customized, high quality training programs specific to our corporate partners. This particular grant will create jobs and support better jobs for more than 200 employees.”

Since the Skills Development Fund’s inception in 1996, Brookhaven College has received 13 grants in partnership with a variety of businesses throughout the area. Brookhaven College’s most recent Skills Development Fund grants came in 2007 in partnership with Source Inc. for $272,196, and in 2006 with Jefferson Physician Group, P.A. for $550,000.

ASC is a Richardson-based, market-leading supplier of heating, air conditioning and ventilation system components for commercial and residential applications. The grant will fund training programs for ASC to upgrade employee computer skills, deliver HVAC industry-specific training, develop current and future managers and improve job related skills for employees.

In fiscal year 2008, the TWC awarded 41 grants totaling more than $22 million in support of customized, high quality training for 148 business, which generated 7,984 new jobs and upgraded the skills of 11,705 workers.
