Rarely seen during the last hundred years, Brookhaven College revived the tradition of the Maypole dance at the finale for the “30 Days of Service” project. It took a few tries to get the pattern right, with dancers weaving in and out in different directions, but it was well worth the effort to see the braided look to the fabric on the pole.
The picnic was a celebration of all the employees and students who worked together in the community. Serving on a total of 19 projects, 91 employees and 118 students, completed 867 hours of service during the 30 Days project. Many recruited spouses, friends and other family to help as well.
In addition to the service hours, college employees, students, friends and families also donated enough birthday party supplies for 476 cupcakes and 1,400 guests to The Family Place, almost 100 stuffed animals to the Farmers Branch 911 Responders, and two 55-gallon drums filled with school supplies and athletic shoes to Metrocrest Social Services. Developmental reading and writing students also donated a check in the amount of $137 along with additional school supplies.
