A new campaign, unveiled by higher education officials, is designed to increase the number of students transferring to four-year universities. Transfer 101: From Community College to University is being backed by the University of Texas System, the Texas A&M University System and the Texas Association of Community Colleges.
Research shows, those who complete community college and transfer to universities tend to graduate from four-year institutions at a higher rate than those who begin their college educations at four-year institutions. Government and education leaders have set a statewide goal of increasing the number of university graduates going into the workforce. Less than 20 percent of community college students are taking the next step and transferring to a four-year university.
Beginning in the fall 2009 semester, plans call for every community college in Texas to post the Transfer 101 logo on their school Web sites. The link will have information on how students can make the transition from a community college to a university. Other efforts seek to enhance relationships with the state’s 50 community college districts; develop transfer success action plans, and a public awareness campaign on options for baccalaureate degree completion.
