Last year's summer musical, The Full Monty
Presenting a summer musical has become a tradition for Theatre Brookhaven, but this year’s production, “RENT,” was hailed for its unconventional themes as a “milestone” of musical theater. “RENT” won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, four Tony awards, the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, the Drama Desk Award and the Obie Award. Performances are scheduled for July 23 to Aug. 2.
Based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera, “La Boheme,” “RENT” tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York’s Lower East Side. It tells the unforgettable story of this diverse group, learning to survive, falling in love, finding their voices and living for today, under the shadow of AIDS.
The play is for mature audiences and should be considered rated R due to language and subject matter. Shows are July 23-25 and July 31-Aug. 1 at 8 p.m., and July 26 and Aug. 2 at 2:30 p.m. in the School of the Arts Performance Hall in Building C. Tickets will go on sale three weeks before the first performance date. Tickets will be available at the School of the Arts Box Office at 972-860-4118. Box Office hours are Monday through Thursday from 1 to 5 p.m. and Friday from 1 to 3 p.m.
