Institute Aims to Increase Student Success

Sylvia Coffey, director of multicultural services, and Daniel Hubbard, director of institutional research, join other district employees in taking notes at one of the Student Success Summer Institute presentations.

On June 11 and 12, the Dallas County Community College District Office of Student Retention presented the “Student Success Summer Institute: Engaging Our Students for Student Success” to more than 125 district educators, administrators and employees at the Bill J. Priest Institute.

Keynote speakers and institute presenters shared successes of programs in student engagement occurring in our district and across the country. Topics included successful developmental studies practices, successful techniques to engage students in the classroom, understanding data in the quest for student success, practices with first-time-in-college students and improving college culture.

Brookhaven College employees who attended were: Bob Smith, Brenda Dalton, Czarina Reyes, Edeleu Florendo, Oscar Lopez, Ramiro Villarreal, Rodger Bennett, Sandy Wyche, Sylvia Coffey, Richard McCrary, Daniel Hubbard, Nita Drescher, Scarlett Hill, Monica Taliaferro, Kim Montes, Doris Rousey and Pam Lucas. Kendra Anorue provided assistance.

Institute Aims to Increase Student Success

Rodger Bennett, interim vice president for instruction, and Oscar Lopez, vice president for enrollment management and student success, are still discussing ideas as they get in line at one of the institute's lunch breaks.

Speakers from the district included Chancellor Wright Lassiter, Sharon Blackman, Lisa Theriot, Karen Stills, Doug Wilson, Rene Prupes, Jim Corvey, Kizuanda Grant, Teri Walker, Jerry Sheerer, Claire Gauntlett, Andrew Jones and Anna Mays.

Other speakers hailed from the Community College Survey of Student Engagement, Valencia Community College, El Paso Community College, Camden County College, College of the Mainland, Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and Student African.
