Justin Lonon, vice chancellor for governmental and public affairs, has asked each of the college presidents to inform him or his office whenever anyone in a governmental position visits their campus, i.e., lecture, reception, etc. If you are thinking of inviting an elected official or a member of the press to the college, please ensure that the Marketing and Public Information Office is notified so that we can supply the visitor with college information and other support materials as needed. In the event of an elected official visiting the college the Police Office should be notified along with M & PI.


Caribbean Arts and Culture class

Dulce Parker discusses the Caribbean and Latin American in Edleeca Thompson’s Caribbean Arts and Culture class.

Students in the Caribbean Arts and Culture course had an opportunity to share their studies and traditional foods when Dulce Parker, community educator, visited Brookhaven College as a special guest, Oct. 6 and 8. Parker discussed the broader African cultural connections in the Caribbean and Latin America. Parker is the founder of Making Connections, Inc., an organization dedicated to educating parents and youth about the importance of valuing education and their cultural heritage. Taught by Edleeca Thompson, professor of cultural studies, the Caribbean arts and culture students welcomed guests and family members to attend and hear the speaker. The program was sponsored by the Office of Student Life and a grant from the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education, FIPSE.

The latest edition of Scrubs Magazine features comments from Juanita Flint, executive dean of the health and human services division at Brookhaven College. “The Future of Nursing: NPs,” focuses on the role that nurse practitioners can play in health care. As a certified family nurse practitioner, Flint sees the role of nursing expanding in the future, as more and more states recognize the valuable role a nurse practitioner can play in providing health care for underserved areas. Marilyn K Lynch

Marilyn K. Lynch, associate vice president for career and program resources and Early College High School, was one of 10 individuals throughout the state invited to participate in a lessons learned focus group regarding early college on Oct. 1 at the Communities Foundation of Texas. The goal of the session, sponsored by the Texas High School Project, THSP, is to collect, process, analyze and share the information gathered as part of the continuous improvement process for better planning of future initiatives, and to improve implementation of new initiatives included in THSP strategic directions.
