Panel Aims to Raise Awareness for Sexual Assault

Sexual Assault Prevention

A panel of campus and outside experts will speak to students about prevention, awareness and handling the after-effects of sexual assault on Sept. 15 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Bldg. X, Room X3008. Outside guests from the Dallas District Attorney's Office, a victim advocate and a sexual assault nurse examiner will answer questions and share their knowledge of sexual assault.

Lt. Gabe Galvez, college police, and Beverly Neu Manassa, professional counselor, also are part of the panel.

A recent article at highlighted an increase in the number of sexual assaults reported in Dallas this year, as much as 48 percent more than the previous year for some categories.

Drugs and alcohol are involved in more than 60 percent of reported sexual assault offenses; approximately 60 percent of sexual assaults involved known offenders or acquaintances.
