Preventing Identity Theft

The fourth annual Data Privacy Day was Jan. 28. This international effort to protect privacy in an online world meant that there were several articles relating privacy in the news. One piece was a particularly good reminder that each of us need to be on guard about our privacy and identity theft protection, so I thought I should share. The Federal Trade Commission has an Identity Theft Clearinghouse that helps educate the public about this problem through their national education campaign - AvoID Theft: Deter, Detect, Defend.






DETER

Deter identity thieves by safeguarding your information.

DETECT

Detect suspicious activity by routinely monitoring your financial accounts and billing statements.

Be alert to signs that require immediate attention:

These steps make it more difficult for identity thieves to steal your identity.

It’s about following the "3 D's" of identity theft protection—Deter, Detect, Defend

DEFEND

Defend against identity theft as soon as you suspect a problem.
