Teams Compete, Support Causes

Teams Compete, Support Causes

Two Brookhaven College athletic teams raised money this month for notable causes.

The men’s basketball team participated in its annual Don Cockrell Alumni Game and bake sale on Oct. 1, raising more than $400 for Operation Kindness, a non-profit no-kill animal shelter.

In a close match, the alumni won, defeating the 2011-2012 Bears 90-86.

The game, a memorial to Don Cockrell, former equipment/tool room coordinator and lover of animals, just entered its third year.

Also this month, the Brookhaven College volleyball team raised $1,140.67 for breast cancer research during its third-annual Dig Pink volleyball game on Oct. 13. The team's goal was to raise $1,000 for the Side-Out Foundation, according to Jason Hopkins, head volleyball coach.

Players and spectators wore pink to raise awareness for the cause, while the Lady Bears, now ranked No. 2 in the National Junior College Athletic Association polls, defeated the Cedar Valley College Lady Suns 3-0.

Great job, Bears!
