Brookhaven College students and staff gathered in the Student Services Center lobby March 8 to celebrate International Women’s Day. The day is observed to show appreciation and respect for the women in history who contributed to the social, political and economic advancement of many countries.
The event began at 11:30 a.m. with Dominica McCarthy, student program development specialist, handing out relevant flyers, bumper stickers, pencils and recommended books.
“This year I wanted to do something that was fun yet educational. We don’t know enough about women’s history,” she said.
Curious onlookers were encouraged to stop by the table, grab a cookie and answer trivia questions about women’s history. If you guessed five questions correctly, you could choose a book from the table to take home; each book featured important women.
Charles Holley, student, was one such winner and is optimistic about his approach to International Women’s Day.
“I’m here taking the first step to educate myself about women’s history,” he said.
This year marks the 24th anniversary for the month of March to be recognized by Congress as Women’s History Month. More information about International Women’s Day can be found online at www.internationalwomensday.com/.
