A small group of Brookhaven College students had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to discuss the brass tacks of college affordability with a sitting Cabinet member.
Former Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk, U.S. Trade Representative, stopped by the college May 11.
With Congress debating bills that could stop a rate increase for interest loans to students, Ambassador Kirk chose to take the discussion to the students in order to gather their perspective.
Dr. Thom D. Chesney, Brookhaven College president, thanked the students for coming the day after commencement and the end of the semester – it’s important that they make their voices heard, he said.
Though the crowd was small on this day after commencement, the students who attended did make an impression. Some had very pointed and specific questions, impressing with mention of bills currently in the House or Senate. Others shared their very personal stories of losing jobs and retraining for a new career at the college, asking about programs that would better meet their needs.
