Paper, cardboard, bottles and cans are invited to the recycle event of the year, but they need your help to get there.
RecycleMania, the national “green” competition among colleges and universities, begins next month, and Brookhaven College is once again in the running. To participate simply drop your recyclables into any recycling bin across campus between Feb. 3 and March 30.
Not sure what qualifies as a recyclable material? You may have more opportunities to recycle than you realize:
Notice a pattern? It’s simple; all materials can be recycled in any one of the college’s blue recycling bins, thanks to the single-stream system.
Brookhaven College is once again competing in RecycleMania’s Per Capita Classic category, which ranks schools based on the total amount of recyclables collected on a per-person basis. Results are calculated by dividing the weight of recyclables by the number of full-time students and staff, according to the event website.
The top college in each category earns bragging rights and a trophy. Brookhaven College is competing against hundreds of higher education institutions, including sister colleges Cedar Valley, Mountain View and North Lake.
Last year Brookhaven College finished 327th out of 338 – ouch! – in the Per Capita Classic, while Richland finished 110th. North Lake finished second out of 180 in the Waste Minimization category.
Let’s take the trophy home this year!
