The Farmers Branch Animal Adoption Center visited the college Aug. 7 with a handful of adoptable dogs as part of a service-learning project for Lorren Montou’s psychology class. The mission of the drive was to raise awareness for animal adoption and show individuals how easy it is to get involved in volunteer opportunities. Although no dogs were adopted that day, the Adoption Center said the exposure was great for them. For information about other volunteer and service opportunities, contact the Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Office at ext. 4703 or visit them in Bldg. S, Room S201.
Brookhaven College had its own series of “hunger games” over the summer. Andrew Deibert, service-learning and civic engagement coordinator, organized a checkers tournament to raise money for the Metrocrest Social Services’ Sack Summer Hunger program. The program provides food to children in need through weekly distribution of snacks and easy-to-prepare meals. The tournament was open to all Brookhaven College employees willing to donate $10 to the program. The event raised $275, which provided seven children with food for nine weeks of summer.
