Dr. Sharon L. Blackman
It’s hard to believe that it's November already. So much has been happening with special events and speakers and in every classroom this semester. It's as if we have all had our heads down working hard to help our students and then suddenly we look up to see that the holiday season is almost here.
I want to take this opportunity to share my thanks for all that the staff and faculty members at the college have done and continue to do to help our students. With the Thanksgiving Holiday coming up, I hope you will take time to relax and “recharge your batteries” with friends and family. We have a big push ahead with Fall finals and Spring registration.
Registration starts for our continuing students in just a few days on Nov. 21. Remember to encourage those students you meet in classrooms, the library, the computer lab or cashiers’ line to continue on with their education. Help those students find the next-step courses that will lead them to earning that certificate or associate degree and achieving their dreams.
In addition to the opportunities we all have to encourage our students in the classroom, the college has several opportunities in the coming weeks to support our students by attending a variety of performances and gallery exhibits. Take a few moments during the busy end of this Fall semester to unwind with a walk through one of the galleries or at one of the upcoming musical performances. The Forum and Studio Galleries feature artwork from some of our fine art students and the Atrium Gallery has an exhibition of student artwork in visual communication. My compliments also go to the Psychology Club for the outstanding job in creating a relaxing atmosphere with the Concerts in the Café.
And, HOW ABOUT THOSE LADY BEARS? Let's cheer for our Volleyball Lady Bears as they go for a three-peat at the national championship tournament in Rochester, Minn., this week! Congratulations to Coach Jason Hopkins and each team member for a successful season.
I want to thank all the faculty and administrators who have taken part in seminars and led presentations at their professional association or organization events. These kinds of activities put forward the good name of Brookhaven College and showcase the wonderful talent and knowledge base we have here. I also have to say that I am looking forward to the Professional Support Staff Association’s bake sale. I have heard there are whole pies and cakes you can pre-order this year to have a homemade item ready to take for Thanksgiving dinner.
To all my colleagues and friends, I want to wish you a safe and happy Thanksgiving.
