Sharon Blackman, Ed.D.
The Virginia Tech tragedy that occurred last week was close to home for those of us who make our living at institutions of higher education. We chose this vocation, or it chose us, because we want to see others grow, develop and become contributing members of our society. Our hearts and thoughts go with the victims and families of those who lost their lives or who were wounded in last week’s incident. Our thoughts and wishes for continued strength to carry out the work of higher learning go to the “Hokies” - the faculty and staff of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
I want to thank the members of Brookhaven’s Student Government Association for conducting the memorial observance last week. Members of the Brookhaven College community shared their thoughts out loud and through notes that were sent to Virginia Tech. Thanks to all of our college members who helped our students and staff members during this difficult time. Please remember that referrals can be made to the Advising and Counseling Center for those who continue to need assistance.
Tragic incidents, such as the one last week, bring forth the need for reminders of our own safety protocols. If you did not do so last week, please take time this week to familiarize yourself with our Emergency Action Plan for Hostile Intruder Guidelines. It can be found online at this link: Hostileguide.doc. Should you have any questions about the guidelines or other safety concerns, please feel free to contact Chief Dave Reagan or any member of our College Police Department. Visit the online Police Department at this link: http://www.brookhavencollege.edu/studentsvcs/police/.
As we turn our focus on some positive activities, congratulations to Brookhaven College’s Phi Theta Kappa Chapter - Alpha Delta Pi. Brookhaven’s chapter won five top awards at the Phi Theta Kappa International conference this month. The awards received included Top 100 Chapters, Most Distinguished Officer - Norma Brousaard, Most Distinguished Member-Marcelo Bohrt-Seeghers, Service Hallmark, and Pinnacle Award for significant membership increase.
Congratulations to the Brookhaven College Literary Award winners who presented their winning entries in a reading at a reception last evening. The students’ talents were inspiring and all spoke about the engaging learning that had taken place in classes taught by retiring Professor Ed Garcia.
Congratulations also to Professor Johnny Castro, Child Development, who will be recognized as the District Vision of Excellence Award winner April 27.
Last Friday the Fun Factor committee kicked off its first activity: “Happy Hour at Gloria’s Restaurant.” New co-workers were introduced along with spouses and family members. It provided the perfect way to unwind from a busy week. Good food and fun was had by all. If you did not make this one, make sure you catch the next one, you’ll probably meet someone new. The Fun Factor committee has several activities planned this summer to help you make a special connection at Brookhaven.
As I conclude, I ask for your positive thoughts for a couple of our colleagues. Dr. Derek Mpinga was returning to Dallas from San Francisco last week and took ill in the airport. He has been hospitalized and hopes to return to Dallas as soon as it is safe for him to travel. Adam Gonzales is having serious heart problems. Let’s keep these and others in our college community in our thoughts for a speedy recovery.
Happy Administrative Professional’s Day to all that help our students reach their dreams!
I wish all of you the best of luck as you complete your semester’s work.
