Cabinets and committees are grouped according to purpose and scope.

Governance

President’s Cabinet  |  Sharon Blackman, president

This senior level cabinet acts as a brain trust for the president, deliberates and makes decisions concerning programs, personnel, buildings and committees. It is also the arena where potential problems and confidential, sensitive matters are discussed.

Extended President’s Cabinet  |  Sharon Blackman, president

This cabinet receives the president’s report from the Chancellor’s Cabinet and communicates information to the rest of the college. It serves as a sounding board for major college decisions and directions. This group may also discuss confidential matters.

Extended President’s Cabinet for Budget and Planning  |  Sharon Blackman, president

This team plans how the college will allocate its financial resources to advance Brookhaven College’s mission. The team meets periodically to help determine funding priorities in preparation for the annual budget build, when additional funds are available or when reallocation is necessary due to loss of funds.

Long-Range Facilities Planning  |  Rodger Bennett and George Herring, co-chairs

In preparation for development of the Comprehensive Facilities Improvement Plan for the DCCCD, the following responsibilities are assigned:

  • collect college input on long range facilities needs;
  • make assessment of priorities and present results to the President’s Cabinet for review;
  • respond to the facilities master plan as proposed by the architects selected by the District;
  • monitor and respond to the actions of the District architects/project managers in relationship to priorities and project parameters; and,
  • provide insights and perspectives on possible re-prioritization of projects as the facilities master plan evolves.

Operations

Achieving the Dream Success Executive Team  |  Sharon Blackman, chair

The Executive Team is the steering committee for the Lumina Foundation Achieving the Dream grant to review activities and results, making modifications in approaches and adjusting targets as needed.

Achieving the Dream Success Core Team  |  Becky Knickel and Johnny Castro, co-chairs

The core team’s charge is to identify existing values, assumptions, structures and systems at the college that nurture and impede student success, while considering leverage points to improve student outcomes. Further, the team is charged with helping to lead a process for setting institutional priorities, goals and strategies.

In concert with the data team, the core team is charged with engaging students, faculty, community leaders and others in dialogue about the findings from the analysis of the data on student achievement and proposed actions to increase success, while promoting sustainability by ensuring that strategies are aligned with the college budget and strategic plan. Finally, they are to provide leadership to spread a culture of inquiry, reflection and commitment to student success throughout the college.

Achieving the Dream Success Data Team  |  Teri Walker, chair

The data team is charged with developing a candid analysis of the college’s performance with respect to student outcomes, with a special focus on low-income students, students of color, and others who face barriers to success. Through building a culture of evidence, this team will present findings in a clear and compelling way that show where the college is doing well and where it needs to improve.

In concert with the core team, this team is charged with developing data as an essential part of the diagnosis, while seeking input from students and faculty to identify strengths and weaknesses of current college policies, structures and services. Finally, the team is charged with conducting an audit of existing programs to determine how well they serve low income students, students of color and others who face barriers to success.

Access and Equity  |  Sheri Van Court, chair

The purpose of the committee is to assess, determine need and implement improvements for educational and campus access. These may include, but are not limited to diversity, safety, emergency and procedural issues.

Art Advisory  |  Mary Brumbach, chair

To guide development of the permanent collection, to accept or reject donations or purchases for the collection, to recommend sites for installation of art work, to approve requests for external funding, and to approve storing or de-accessioning of art work.

Bookstore Advisory  |  Dawn Bishop, chair

The Bookstore Advisory team provides an opportunity to communicate bookstore issues and receive feedback in a group setting with representation from administration, faculty, staff, students, and contracted bookstore staff. The advisory team serves as liaison between the campus community and contracted bookstore management.

Communications Management  |  Brenda Dalton, chair

The Brookhaven Communications Management Group determines how technology and the Communications Module in Colleague can best be used to impact student success and student retention.

Core Curriculum Evaluation  |  Delryn Fleming, Richard McCrary and Michael Dennehy, tri-chairs

The CCEC leads the college in designing, implementing and reporting assessment measures for the educational objectives of courses within the Core Curriculum.

Curriculum  |  Brain McClung and Stephen Herd, co-chairs

The college Curriculum Committee is appointed by the college president and has the responsibility to review proposed curriculum revisions submitted by district curriculum committees that impact courses and programs offered by the college.

Enrollment Management  |  Richard McCrary, chair

To ensure a comprehensive schedule and maximize space utilization.

Food Service Advisory  |  Dawn Bishop, chair

The Food Service Advisory Team provides an opportunity to communicate food service and vending issues and receive feedback in a group setting with representation from administration, faculty, staff, students, and contracted food service staff. This advisory team serves as liaison between the campus community and contracted food service management.

Fund 12 Budget Advisory  |  Claude Caffee, chair

The committee is formed to review budgets pertaining to the use of student services funds generated by students and to advise college personnel on the usage of such monies to assure that student needs are adequately addressed. This committee will also advise the college president of any proposal to increase student services budgetary issues to meet student needs.

Refund Petition  |  Tim Smithart, chair

To process student requests for full refund of tuition after they have dropped courses.

Safety and Loss Prevention  |  Dave Reagan and Mark Lopez, co-chairs

The Safety and Loss Prevention team shall review campus and community issues related to environmental, health, safety and risk, and make appropriate recommendations for corrective or preventive actions to the President’s Cabinet. The campus safety team periodically reviews and provides updates to the Emergency Response Plan and Disaster Recovery Plan.

The purpose of this team is also to discuss campus safety issues and attempt to resolve the safety concern in order to minimize risk to the people on our campus, students or staff. The risk of financial loss is minimized by resolving safety issues.

Technology Team

To aid in the development and maintenance of an on-going technology plan that could be incorporated as part of the college strategic planning process and to evaluate and communicate emerging technologies to the Brookhaven College community.

Uniform Recruitment and Retention Strategic Report  |  Carrie Schweitzer, chair and editor

This committee was formed to respond to House Bill 1678, now codified as Texas Education Code 61.086. The purpose is to conduct an internal and external analysis to develop measurable recruiting and retention goals. Based on the results of the analysis, we will develop a marketing plan to attract, recruit and retain a diverse population. After the plan is implemented, we will monitor and adjust its ability to meet its goals.

Activities

Awards & Recognition Committee  |  Carrie Schweitzer, chair

Contributes to planning and presenting annual awards and recognition events at Brookhaven College. Advises on changes needed in process, implementation of new activities, etc.

Commencement  |  Claude Caffee, chair

The committee is responsible for the planning/orchestration of the annual Brookhaven College graduation. The event takes place in May of each year. The committee is responsible for the site recommendations each year and the college events planned to celebrate students’ success.

Holiday  |  Carrie Schweitzer, chair

Plan and present a December luncheon to celebrate winter holidays.

State Employee Charitable Campaign  |  Carrie Schweitzer, chair

Design annual charitable giving campaign for Brookhaven College as part of the system-wide campaign and collect pledges from Brookhaven College employees to meet designated contribution goals.
