This sampler series is an introduction to the use of color and design to create patterns on cotton, silk and other fabric blends by using resistance dyeing, printing and batik. Learn various techniques of knotting, binding, folding, dipping, and pleating. You can apply these techniques to create landscapes, portraits or still life and use use memories of family events, travel and nature to create fabric-painted masterpieces. Students will explore simple techniques–drawing, painting, writing and gluing through fabric manipulation–in a series of studies that emphasize personal expressions. The final work will culminate in a fabric-painted narrative collage or postcard.

A mosaic is a medium that brings art and craft together and allows you to express your imagination through the creative arrangement of materials. Simple geometric shapes can enable you to create intricate patterns. Experiment with various textured surfaces and complete a project working in the style of direct application. A selection of stone, glass, glazed/unglazed tile, shells and non-traditional found objects will be provided. Students can pace their progress to complete two or three projects.

Learn step-by-step special effect techniques to paint with watercolor and acrylic. A review of the basics of color, composition and design techniques will help budding artists express themselves. Students will complete paintings on paper and canvas, using these new techniques to transform each piece of art into mini-masterpieces.

Learn the principles of sculpting using traditional and non-traditional methods and mediums to create three-dimensional artwork. Explore a variety of sculpting techniques and influences from around the world including gauze wrapping of ancient Egypt, Greek and Roman clay carving and more.

Learn the basic principles of creating cartoons. You’ll learn step-by-step techniques in expression, movement, perspective, text and gesture drawing methods will be demonstrated. Create storyboards and character portraits that will culminate in a personal comic book. Students should have some interest in drawing, as there will be a lot of practice sketching. Young artists are welcome to bring in drawings and sketches for portfolio review.

The art of mosaic has existed for more than 2,000 years. The combination of functional and decorative qualities has ensured its timeless appeal. With patience, time and imagination, you can create wondrous beauty. Possible projects include decorative steppingstones, wall hangings and coasters. The course supply list will be available at the first class but bring a permanent marker, goggles, scissors, a hammer, and rubber gloves to the first class meeting.

By coil, slab and use of the wheel, you’ll learn to create your own pottery pieces. This multi-level course is designed to meet individual needs. The course covers beginning throwing, altering and combining hand-built forms with thrown forms. In addition to creating pieces, you will have the opportunity to use different types of kilns for finishing the work, including wood, soda, raku and reduction. Glazes and firing are included in the tuition but clay and tool kits are not.

You will learn what digital photography is and how photography evolved to this exciting new level. You will have an opportunity to really learn about the different features available on digital cameras and find out what to look for both inside and outside the camera.

Start with the basics to help you create better images. This course covers essential camera operations, exposure control, depth of field, composition, film stock and night photography, all to improve your photos. This course will incorporate at least one location shoot. Students can expect weekly assignments, geared toward the application of classroom information.

Learn the importance of light in all styles and types of photography. Begin by refreshing your knowledge and understanding of how to use a digital SLR camera to manage and manipulate light. Explore the basic principles of light in various settings and in relation to different styles of photography. Each class will highlight concepts and ideas but will focus primarily on hands-on use of camera and lighting equipment. At least one field trip for an on-location shoot will be included.

Take this course to explore basic portrait photography using various lighting sources, environmental locations and posing. Weekly assignments geared towards applying classroom theories will cover camera formats, equipment, film, and studio and natural lighting. This course will incorporate at least one location shoot. Textbook is optional and will be discussed during the first class session.

Bring the digital camera you want to learn about and its operation manual, with fully charged batteries and an empty media card. The class also is helpful for those with advanced, compact or point-and-shoot cameras.

If you are a complete beginner at lighting, no worries, this course starts from the beginning of flash usage, and prepares you to use light stands and umbrellas. This beginner’s workshop will explore the historical and contemporary applications of wax on a variety of prepared surfaces to create texture, preservation and vibrant color imagery. Discover the versatility of wax melting, layering, scraping, and fusing. VET, a professional artist, will guide students in step-by-step techniques that combine encaustic with other mediums using oil paint, pastels and other mixed media choices.

In this workshop, we will explore the creative process of recycling by innovative means to produce a work of art. Constructing a simple top introduces beginners to the basics of sewing. Learn how to use the sewing machine, select fabric, read a pattern envelope, layout fabric and pattern, mark and cut fabric, and interpret the pattern directions to sew each piece together.

For those who want to learn more about sewing, this course will teach you about basic apparel construction. Learn to construct pajama pants, add initials to a pillow, use hand appliqué techniques and make a Crazy Quilt.

Learn the basics of forging metal just as the blacksmiths of the past. You will learn both art and skill in using a hammer and anvil to move heated metal into new and exciting shapes. Making basic tools for your own use will be included in this class.

Students experienced in basic metal forging will continue to learn more complex techniques in blacksmithing. The art of tool making, the technique of heat treating, and the artistry of ornamental iron work will be covered in this course.

Students will learn advanced techniques in metal forging. Welding from the forge, making pattern-welded Damascus and practicing decorative ornamentation techniques in both bar and sheet metal will be covered.

This entry-level course focuses on oxy-acetylene and arc welding techniques for the craftsman. No experience is necessary. Note: Class size is limited so register early.

An extension of Oxy-acetylene and Arc Welding for the Craftsman, students can continue to examine the principals of oxy-fuel welding and gas metal arc welding in a safe, professional manner. The course emphasizes original design in welded sculpture. During the tenure of the course, students may elect to participate in a section on steel forging, which is the ancient art of heating and forming steel. Note: Class size is limited so register early.
