Works from contemporary Indian filmmakers and Indian filmmakers living in the U.S. will be discussed. This course also will cover films that are bold in their themes, experimental in their approach, and are very hard-hitting and real in their intent.
Creative WritingCREATIVE WRITING: FLASH INTO THE FUTUREEditors, with the advent of the Internet, are looking for stories between 300 and 1,000 words long that can be more easily read on a computer screen. Called “flash fiction,” this new genre of writing is usually a story that focuses on a single act, the culmination of several unwritten events. Join us and learn the technique of writing tight and writing fast–the essence of flash fiction–in a workshop setting.
POETRY WRITINGFrom first inspiration to finished product, come explore the creative process of poetry writing! First-time writers and local working poets alike are encouraged to enroll in this workshop-oriented course, which will review forms and styles of poetry; examine the meter and rhythm of modern and ancient verse; investigate the transgressive nature of writing masterly poetry; and impart tested methods of inspiring personal creativity. Fashion DesignBASIC SEWING AND HAND SEWINGThis course includes studying apparel design, construction and assembly techniques. Some basic hand sewing methods are shown, along with embroidery techniques. Supplies: Please bring a portable sewing machine to the first class. The supply list will be discussed in detail at the first class meeting.
CeramicsCERAMICSBy coil, slab and use of the wheel, you’ll learn to create your own pottery pieces. This multi-level course is designed to meet individual needs. The course covers beginning throwing, altering and combining hand-built forms with thrown forms. In addition to creating pieces, you will have the opportunity to use different types of kilns for finishing the work, including wood, soda, raku and reduction. Glazes and firing are included in the tuition but clay and tool kits are not. Supplies: The supply list will be available at the first class. Your instructor will distribute a handout with more detailed information.
Cooking and Culinary ArtJUNIOR CHEF, AGES 11 - 17Cooking can be fun for children of all ages. By experimenting with a variety of foods, students will discover how to prepare healthy meals, snacks and even desserts! Students also will enjoy using their own creativity to put together a recipe book.
BAKING BASICS, AGES 11-17Learn the basics of baking, and how to use an oven! Learn how to measure and mix ingredients and how to follow a recipe. You will make biscuits, cookies, pies, and cakes, and have a recipe cook-off judged by their parents on the final day!
CAKE DECORATING, BEGINNING, AGES 11-17Discover a new way to add excitement to your cakes and cupcakes. This course will help you learn the basics of decorating with icing, creating borders and writing on cakes. You will see how rewarding it is to create desserts to share with your family and friends.
CAKE DECORATING, ADVANCED, AGES 11-17Prerequisites: Cake Decorating, Beginning course is recommended. Review the basics and then move to a new dimension of cake decorating. Learn to shape and tier cakes, make butter cream and royal icing, and work with fondant and gum paste to create works of edible art. Plus, take your projects home to share with family and friends.
CUISINES AROUND THE WORLD, AGES 11-17Come take a culinary journey around the World! This course includes a little of everything. Each class meeting will focus on different cuisines and menus from selected regions of the world.
CraftsMASTERPIECE MOSAICTake this opportunity to work with mixed media artist, VET, to transform geometric shapes into intricate patterns of delight. Whether experienced or a novice, each mosaic experience is sure to bring delight and surprise upon completion. Students will experiment with various textured surfaces of stone, glass, tile, shells and other found- objects provided by the instructor. Select a design and create 2-D relief and 3-D mosaic sculptures. Supplies: There is an additional $10 cost for materials, which will be collected in class.
INTRODUCTION TO SEWING, AGES 10-17From the basics of a sewing machine to basic hand sewing techniques, you’ll be introduced to sewing in this exciting class. You can even try your hand with an embroidery machine. Throughout the class, you’ll have the chance to construct a tote bag, backpack or a stuffed animal. Students also will learn how to sew on buttons, hem a pair of pants and put on patches. Supplies: There will be an additional $10 cost for materials, which will be collected in class.
INTERMEDIATE SEWING, AGES 10-17Prerequisites: Introduction to Sewing or instructor approval. For those who want to learn more about sewing, this course will teach you about basic apparel construction. Learn to construct pajama pants, add initials to a pillow, use hand appliqué techniques and make a Crazy Quilt. Personal EnrichmentME AND MY MONEY, AGES 10-17Managing your money takes some simple know-how. Learn the basics of managing your money, including how to create a budget and make a savings plan, so you can reach your dollar goal. You will learn about comparing prices, opening a checking account, writing checks and keeping a check register. Students will participate in a scenario game throughout the week where they must secure a job, apartment and transportation in an assigned city and with a given budget.
CAREER EXPLORATION, AGES 14-17You are almost headed to college, and must begin to make important decisions-one of which is choosing a career. It is important that you begin to think about a career path to college because it will help you select the right college that specializes in your career, and while you are still in high school, you can begin to focus on those classes that are required to fulfill your career goals. We will teach and learn basic career development planning skills, your strength, weaknesses, and your potential fit for a particular career. Students will learn about the importance of careers, and also learn the basic steps and techniques for preparing for and having a successful career and balanced life.
NAVIGATION TO MIDDLE SCHOOL, AGES 10-13Gain the confidence and skills to master the challenges and changes of middle school with confidence. During this workshop, you will learn conflict management techniques, strategies for handling peer pressure, valuable study skills, and effective ways to communicate with your teachers and/or school counselor. In addition, participants will explore different career options based on their interests, talents and desires.
CHARACTER BUILDING FOR SUCCESS, AGES 10-13Do you know the proper manners to use in public? How can you show respect to adults, family and friends? We’ll use role-playing and discussions to uncover the connections between protocol and respect for your personal space and for others. We will work together to improve your knowledge of how to use proper social and business etiquette. Trustworthiness, integrity, honesty, responsibility and respect are some of the personal characteristics we will cover. You will learn how your behavior and the decisions you make form the core of your character.
MIND YOUR MANNERS, AGES 10-17Gain an introduction to basic etiquette skills, including table settings, ordering from a menu, holding appropriate table conversation and more! You will learn the proper way to address adults; create formal and informal invitations; review casual, business casual and formal attire; and write thank you letters.
Digital and FilmDIGITAL CAMERAS: HOW TO USE YOUR POINT AND SHOOT CAMERADiscover how easy it is to use the features of your point and shoot digital camera to its full potential. There are simple adjustments you can make to the camera settings that will produce better images for you to enjoy and share. Also, you will learn to use your camera set-ups from the menu and basic composition tips to make your images more interesting. Bring the digital camera you want to learn about and its operation manual, with fully charged batteries and an empty media card. The class also is helpful for those with an advanced compact/point and shoot or digital SLR camera.
PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY • Eligible for Financial AidPrerequisites: Completion of the Basic 35mm Photography or Black and White Darkroom courses; or permission of the instructor. DIGITAL CAMERAS: DSLR AND ADVANCED COMPACT DIGITAL CAMERA WORKSHOPPrerequisites: Highly recommended that students have some basic photography knowledge in f-stop, shutter speed and ISO as well as working knowledge of their camera’s manual. Learn by doing in this workshop with hands-on projects each week. Projects are done in class, with no homework, except some shooting your feet – learning technique. Improve your images by using the features of your camera. Your coursework will let you learn the technique/settings, perform tasks with your team partner; and present each week's assignment to your classmates. Supplies: Digital Single Lens Reflex, DSLR, camera with operations manual required. The more advanced compact, point and shoot style cameras, with the ability to shoot in other than AUTO mode (shutter priority, aperture priority and manual modes) also may be used. An external flash and tripod are nice to have, but not needed to get the most out of the course. Fiber ArtsBATIK: HOT AND COLDYou can use color and design to create the unique pattern of batik. Using resistance dyeing and a few practice sessions, learn to apply wax using the tjanting tool and brush. VET, mixed media artist, also will reveal alternative methods of achieving faux batik patterning using non-traditional, water-based resists and fixatives. Supplies: There is an additional $10 cost for materials, which will be collected in class.
Jewelry MakingJEWELRY MAKING, BEGINNINGA beautiful piece of jewelry can inspire the desire to create. Take this course and practice designing jewelry to wear, give as gifts or to sell. In this course, students will discover how to design, texture, saw, file, cold-connect, solder and polish. Students will be able to create pins, pendants, earrings, bracelets, and necklaces. This course is for every skill level. Supplies: At the first class meeting, students will need to bring a 100mm depth saw frame and two dozen 3/0 saw blades. JEWELRY MAKING, INTERMEDIATEPrerequisites: Jewelry Making: Beginning, or permission of the instructor. A continuation of our popular beginning jewelry making course, in this course the instructor will work with students individually on more complex projects, with an emphasis on design. Techniques include etching on metal, firing metals, using epoxy mixed with pigments and chain making.
JEWELRY MAKING WITH SILVER METAL CLAY PART IPrerequisites: No experience is necessary to enroll in this course. Get an introduction to the fun and excitement of making your own fine silver jewelry. You don’t need metalworking experience. Silver metal clay is a remarkable clay made of microscopic particles of fine silver, mixed with an organic binder, to give it the consistency of clay. The metal clay can be rolled, textured, molded, carved and shaped to create earrings, pendants and charms. You will have the opportunity to create these pieces while learning the basic metal clay skills using lump, syringe and paste forms of the clay. PaintingBEGINNING ENCAUSTIC PAINTINGEnter the world of wax-based painting known as encaustic painting. This beginner’s workshop will explore the historical and contemporary applications of wax on a variety of prepared surfaces to create texture, preservation and vibrant color imagery. Discover the versatility of wax melting, layering, scraping, and fusing. VET, a professional artist, will guide students in step-by-step techniques that combine encaustic with other mediums using oil paint, pastels and other mixed media choices. Supplies: There is an additional $10 cost for materials, which will be collected in class.
MIXED MEDIALearn and use design principles and your personal imagery to create beautiful collage pieces. You will learn techniques for combining water media, both watercolor and acrylic, will be combined with oil pastel, colored pencil, recycled old drawings and paintings, photographic images and found or prepared papers. The course is designed to stimulate your imagination and produce new ideas. Supplies: The instructor will hand out a supply list at the first class meeting. Bring whatever art supplies, if any, you already have to the first class.
OIL PAINTINGFrom amateur to professional, anyone can discover the beauty of working with oils. You will study visual expression and styles; explore subjects, perspective and design; and learn how to begin. Part of the course will look at the variety of mediums, materials and various painting surfaces available. Supplies: For the first class meeting, please bring a pencil; an eraser; and an 11" x 14" sketchbook. Additional supplies are required for this course; the instructor will hand out a supply list at the first class meeting.
MURALS 101Learn to create murals big and small that will inspire and amaze everyone. You will learn the basic elements of developing a theme and designing a layout as well as how to apply paint to various surfaces. There are several painting techniques for creating murals that you will learn to apply including the use of stencils, grids and projections. Work with muralist, VET, as she shares her expertise working on indoor and outdoor murals and the special challenges each presents. You will have the opportunity to participate in a public mural project, which will be announced later. The class is geared toward teachers or anyone interested in learning how to paint murals.
PAINTING: OIL OR ACRYLICChoose from oil or acrylic and learn a wide variety of technical and conceptual areas, including still-life, landscape, portraiture and abstraction. This is a great one-on-one course with lots of individual attention. Beginners to advanced painters are welcome. DanceBOLLYWOOD DANCE WORKSHOPCome join us for our latest fitness activity, Bollywood dancing! This workshop will teach you rhythmic and modern Bollywood steps that will combine Indian folk movements such as Bhangra and Dandia, and some Indian classical dance movements as well. These movements and breathing exercises open up the body and give it more grace and flexibility. Then the dance training will begin. The dance movements are upbeat, rhythmic, classic, energetic and graceful. The entire body, from feet to eyes, are utilized in the choreography of these dances. So get ready to Bollywood today.
COUNTRY WESTERN, LINE, AND TEJANO DANCE, BEGINNINGFor those who enjoy country music but don't dance, this course starts with basic lines dances such as the Cotton-Eyed Joe, the Schottische and the Freeze. Then we will do the basics of the Two-Step, Double-Two, and Tejano. We'll also learn the basics of leading and following, done to the tempos of both traditional and contemporary country music. BALLROOM DANCEBallroom is back! Re-live the favorites from the 1930s and 40s as well as today's music with this wonderful course. Learn the Foxtrot, Tango, Rumba, Waltz, Cha-Cha and East Coast Swing.
STRICTLY SWING DANCETap your feet to the single, double and triple time tempos of the 30s, 40s and 50s. Try your hand at lindy timing and practice the upbeat tempos of the East Coast Swing and Jitterbug. This course will begin with the basics and advance to fun and footloose skills like the sweetheart, pretzel, tuck turns and free spin turns. You’ll learn to the big band music as well as the up-tempo, retro music of the 90’s and new millennium.
HIP HOP, AGES 10-14The dance steps of today’s music videos are Hip Hop styles. Learn this fun form of street dance. Hip Hop courses are designed to teach coordination, strength, quickness, agility and endurance. INTRODUCTION TO BLUES GUITARPrerequisites: Completion of a beginning guitar course, equivalent experience or permission of the instructor. This course is open to all students with knowledge of basic bar chords and the pentatonic scale. Topics include the standard twelve and eight bar blues forms, chord voicings, scales and rhythmic elements. SUZUKI STRINGS PROGRAMChildren, ages three to 18, can find their musical voice through Suzuki-inspired courses in violin and viola. Our goal is providing rich and enjoyable music experiences that will contribute to the development of self-confident, happy children. Students receive weekly private lessons as well as twice-a-month group classes. Under the Suzuki method, daily listening to music is as vital as practicing performance techniques. The Suzuki program requires active participation of a parent, including attendance at lessons and daily practice with the child. A positive musical experience shared between parent and child is central to the Suzuki philosophy. All individual lessons are arranged by appointment with the Arts Academy director.
