The Indian film industry is multi-lingual and, in terms of ticket sales and the number of films produced, the largest in the world. The industry is supported mainly by a vast, film-going Indian public and Indian films have been gaining increasing popularity in the rest of the world—notably in countries with large numbers of expatriate Indians. One third of the Indian film industry is mostly concentrated in Mumbai (Bombay) and is commonly referred to as Bollywood. However, along with Bollywood cinema, India also has produced a number of classic, or “Parallel and Art Cinema” films. This course will cover films from the classic Indian directors who directed parallel cinema and from the popular Indian directors who have made characteristic Bollywood cinema.

This course will cover the changing trends the cinema of India and will discuss some of the themes that are being explored in this country’s cinema today. With a strong background in “Parallel” and “Art Cinema,” India has witnessed some huge changes in the way films are being made and consumed, by an ever-changing audience. Works from contemporary Indian filmmakers and Indian filmmakers living in the U.S. will be discussed. This course also will cover films that are bold in their themes, experimental in their approach, and are very hard-hitting and real in their intent.

You will have the opportunity to process black and white film, make contact sheets and prints, vary contrast, burn and dodge, crop your photographs in the enlarger and mount your completed works. You also will learn how to display photographs.

Our introduction to fashion sketching covers various media and includes the techniques associated with quick-sketching. Basic proportions of the female fashion figure are studied.

This course addresses the crucial step in the development of one’s fashion portfolio, which contains original design work, flats and specifications, and photographs.

This course includes studying apparel design, construction and assembly techniques. Some basic hand sewing methods are shown, along with embroidery techniques.

Create your own works of art in this 2-D drawing and painting course that utilizes several mediums, including watercolor and acrylic. You’ll learn the history of different art styles and be shown how to use artists’ methods in your own finished pieces. You will work on a variety of projects and will complete one or more items to take home at the end of the course. In most of the projects, all materials will be provided by the instructor.

By coil, slab and use of the wheel, you’ll learn to create your own pottery pieces. This multi-level course is designed to meet individual needs. The course covers beginning throwing, altering and combining hand-built forms with thrown forms. In addition to creating pieces, you will have the opportunity to use different types of kilns for finishing the work, including wood, soda, raku and reduction. Glazes and firing are included in the tuition but clay and tool kits are not.

Take this opportunity to work with mixed media artist, VET, to transform geometric shapes into intricate patterns of delight. Whether experienced or a novice, each mosaic experience is sure to bring delight and surprise upon completion. Students will experiment with various textured surfaces of stone, glass, tile, shells and other found- objects provided by the instructor. Select a design and create 2-D relief and 3-D mosaic sculptures.

You’ve seen those canvas totes and shopping bags at almost every store. These large and small bags are both fashionable and useful. Come join us for function and fun as we decorate cloth surface bags using stamps, stencils and paint. VET, the instructor, will guide students with step-by-step instructions on how to add contemporary style and vibrant color to each design.

Discover how easy it is to use the features of your point and shoot digital camera to its full potential. There are simple adjustments you can make to the camera settings that will produce better images for you to enjoy and share. Also, you will learn to use your camera set-ups from the menu and basic composition tips to make your images more interesting. Bring the digital camera you want to learn about and its operation manual, with fully charged batteries and an empty media card. The class also is helpful for those with an advanced compact/point and shoot or digital SLR camera.

If you want better pictures, you need to start with the basics. From the essentials of camera operations to tools and accessories that can improve your shots, you will have weekly assignments that put your learning into practice. With demonstrations and exercises you will learn to use exposure control, depth of field, composition, film stock and different accessories to improve your photos. Take this course to explore basic portrait photography using various lighting sources, environmental locations and posing. You’ll learn the different concepts behind each of these kinds of photography as well as how to shoot for each style. Your instructor will guide you through the creation, production and performance of an original play. Through a variety of theater and improvisational games, you will create a character of your own choice. You will enjoy learning theatrical techniques and terminology, while parents will be happy that you are also learning techniques to expand problem solving skills and cooperation. The class will collaborate on the development and performance of an original play sure to delight audiences of family and friends. Costuming, props and scenery pieces are limited, so you will need to be creative.

You can use color and design to create the unique pattern of batik. Using resistance dyeing and a few practice sessions, learn to apply wax using the tjanting tool and brush. VET, mixed media artist, also will reveal alternative methods of achieving faux batik patterning using non-traditional, water-based resists and fixatives.

This sampler series is just the spark you need to generate luscious hues and spectacular designs. Get introduced to the use of color and design to create patterns on cotton, silk and other fabric blends by using the resistance dyeing, printing and batik methods. You also will learn various techniques of knotting, binding, folding, dipping and pleating. You will then apply these techniques to selected scarves, wraps or another garment of your own choosing. This course is suitable for teens and adults.

A beautiful piece of jewelry can inspire the desire to create. Take this course and practice designing jewelry to wear, give as gifts or to sell. In this course, students will discover how to design, texture, saw, file, cold-connect, solder and polish. Students will be able to create pins, pendants, earrings, bracelets, and necklaces. A continuation of our popular beginning jewelry making course, in this course the instructor will work with students individually on more complex projects, with an emphasis on design. Techniques include etching on metal, firing metals, using epoxy mixed with pigments and chain making.

Get an introduction to the fun and excitement of making your own fine silver jewelry. You don’t need metalworking experience. Silver metal clay is a remarkable clay made of microscopic particles of fine silver, mixed with an organic binder, to give it the consistency of clay. The metal clay can be rolled, textured, molded, carved and shaped to create earrings, pendants and charms. You will have the opportunity to create these pieces while learning the basic metal clay skills using lump, syringe and paste forms of the clay. Tools will be furnished by the instructor for in-class use.

Learn how to create a life-like leaf out of silver metal clay. Accent your pieces by adding 24k gold foil, using the ancient bonding technique of Keum-boo. Learn how to solder findings on metal clay.

If you have experience using metal clay, we can help you take your skills to the next level. You will learn how to add color using epoxy. We will use different types of metal clay to make a ring out of slow dry material and a bezel out of paper type material.

Learn and use design principles and your personal imagery to create beautiful collage pieces. You will learn techniques for combining water media, both watercolor and acrylic, will be combined with oil pastel, colored pencil, recycled old drawings and paintings, photographic images and found or prepared papers. The course is designed to stimulate your imagination and produce new ideas.

From amateur to professional, anyone can discover the beauty of working with oils. You will study visual expression and styles; explore subjects, perspective and design; and learn how to begin. Part of the course will look at the variety of mediums, materials and various painting surfaces available.

Learn to create murals big and small that will inspire and amaze everyone. You will learn the basic elements of developing a theme and designing a layout as well as how to apply paint to various surfaces. There are several painting techniques for creating murals that you will learn to apply including the use of stencils, grids and projections. Work with muralist, VET, as she shares her expertise working on indoor and outdoor murals and the special challenges each presents. You will have the opportunity to participate in a public mural project, which will be announced later. The class is geared toward teachers or anyone interested in learning how to paint murals.

Choose from oil or acrylic and learn a wide variety of technical and conceptual areas, including still-life, landscape, portraiture and abstraction. This is a great one-on-one course with lots of individual attention. Beginners to advanced painters are welcome.

This entry-level course focuses on oxy-acetylene and arc welding techniques for the craftsman. No experience is necessary. Note: Class size is limited so register early.

An extension of Oxy-acetylene and Arc Welding for the Craftsman, students can continue to examine the principals of oxy-flue welding and gas metal arc welding in a safe, professional manner. The course emphasizes original design in welded sculpture.
