Important Information for Students Entering a Health Care Career Program Students interested in a Health Care Career program should register in person at Brookhaven College to ensure that they have received all the necessary information for their success in the program. Students should come to the Workforce and Continuing Education Division Office in the Student Services Center, Building S, Room S022, at Brookhaven College’s main campus, 3939 Valley View Lane, Farmers Branch. Some courses involving a clinical experience require a background check and drug-screening test. Students undergo a criminal background check and drug testing prior to beginning their clinical experience. Students who do not pass both the criminal background check and drug test will not be allowed to continue on to components. Students will receive specific directions at the time of registration concerning how these checks should be performed. These checks must be completed no more than 30 days before the start of the clinical experience. For any course with a clinical component, students need to receive the following immunizations prior to registration. Brookhaven College will require a copy of proof of immunization for Hepatitis B series of vaccines-The first and second dose are required before registering in the first course. The third dose is required before registering in the clinical component. PPD tuberculin test-The test must be less than six months old. If students had a previous positive PPD test, documentation or history of treatment is required. Some of the health career courses with a clinical component will require the purchase of liability insurance. The cost for the fall semester is $18.13, spring semester is $11 and summer semester is $5. Acute Care Training For EMTs, Nurses and PhysiciansThese specialty continuing education courses are offered through Brookhaven College for the certified/licensed, professional health care provider whose primary work is serving patients in acute care settings. The courses are suitable for emergency medical technicians, paramedics, nurses, physicians and other acute care providers. Throughout the year, these courses will vary to include American Heart Association basic, advanced and pediatric life support as well as National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians, NAEMT, courses in Prehospital Trauma Life Support, PHTLS, and Advanced Medical Life Support, AMLS. In addition, we will offer American Academy of Pediatrics courses such as the Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals, PEPP and Texas Department of State Health Services EMS recertification courses. Standard scheduled course offerings are for the provider level. Instructor-level courses are offered on an as-needed basis. Other courses offered may include EKG interpretation, neonatal resuscitation, the traumatic brain injury and geriatric emergency medical services courses. ADVANCED CARDIAC LIFE SUPPORT, ACLS - FAST TRACK • Eligible for Financial AidPrerequisites: Must have a current Health Care Provider BCLS (CPR) completion card. It is recommended that registrants be medical, nursing or paramedical personnel who are experienced in all advanced cardiac life support functions. Successful completion of the two-day ACLS course within the last five years is recommended. This accelerated course outlines and enhances the theory and skills necessary for professional personnel practicing in critical care units, emergency departments and paramedic ambulances. The instruction establishes a system of protocols for management of the patient experiencing cardiac emergencies. Course consists of lectures, small group presentations and medical application of skills. Students will be evaluated on how they perform in skill situations and must pass a written examination to gain a completion certificate from the American Heart Association. Supplies: Students MUST have completed all items on the pre-course requirements checklist, included in the study packet, prior to the first class meeting. PEDIATRIC ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT, PALS - FAST TRACK • Eligible for Financial AidPrerequisites: Must have a current Health Care Provider BCLS (CPR) card. It is recommended that registrants be medical, nursing or paramedical personnel who are experienced in all pediatric advanced life support functions. Successful completion of the two-day PALS course within the last five years is recommended. This accelerated PALS course outlines the theory and skills necessary for the management of pediatric emergencies by professional medical personnel as specified by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart Association. Students in this course will be asked to demonstrate a working knowledge of clinical and related topics relevant to pediatric emergencies; display the ability to completely perform all applicable skills; and utilize current PALS principles and recommendations to assess and manage pediatric emergencies. Students will be evaluated on how they perform skills under specific situation and must pass a written examination to gain a completion certificate from the American Heart Association. Dental AssistingDENTAL ASSISTING • Eligible for Financial AidPrerequisites: Students must have had three doses of Hepatitis B Vaccine prior to registering for this class; ability to read English at 12-grade level; high school diploma or GED. The Dental Assisting Program is designed to prepare the student to function effectively as an integral member of the dental health care team. Stimulating, fast paced instruction relies heavily on students participation. Course provides classroom instruction and basic clinical assisting skills. During the ten weeks of training, students will learn dental theory and terminology, the techniques of four-handed chairside procedures, exposing and processing dental radiographs or x-rays including an introduction to digital and panoramic radiology. Instruction also covers infection control standards, obtaining impressions of the oral cavity for the fabrication of study models and custom trays used for vital bleaching procedures, preparing dental material, fabrication of provisional coverage. Students will spend time assisting and observing in a participating dental office. The Dental Assisting Program prepares students for the Texas Certification in Radiology, Infection Control and Jurisprudence. One-time tuition covers instruction, materials, textbook and dental supplies and equipment. ElectrocardiographyEKG technicians are responsible for performing diagnostic tests to monitor and record the heart rhythm and rate in patients. These tests include basic EKGs, Holter monitoring, 12 lead placement and stress tests. Our comprehensive electrocardiography program prepares students to take the Electrocardiograph, EKG, Technician exam and to function as EKG technicians. EKG TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION • Eligible for Financial AidThis course will include important practice and background information on anatomy and physiology of the heart, medical disease processes, medical terminology and ethics, legal aspects of patient contact, the Holter monitor, electrocardiography and echocardiography. Home Health CareHOME HEALTH CARE AND HOSPICE AIDE • Eligible for Financial AidPrerequisites: High School diploma or GED equivalent. Learn the concepts and skills required to provide basic patient care within the client’s home. Coursework includes infection control, safety, basic physical and psychosocial needs as related to developmental stages, patient care skills, and principles of nutrition and home management. At the end of course, successful students will be able to perform basic patient care skills safely and apply their knowledge of basic skills to the home setting. This program also prepares students to use their knowledge of communication to interact effectively with clients and their families based upon sensitivity to their psychosocial needs and communicate effectively with clients to maintain maximum functional independence. Medical Records Coding and Claims TechnicianCoding professionals are specialists skilled in classifying medical data from patient records. Coding practitioners review patient records and assign numerical codes for each diagnosis and procedure. PHARMACOLOGY FOR INSURANCE CODING • Eligible for Financial AidThe general classifications of drugs and their actions and side effects are the focus of this course, as they relate to anatomy and physiology. Course emphasis is on drug interactions with each body system, pharmaceutical medical terminology, and generic and trade names of drugs. INSURANCE CLAIMS PROCESSING ADVANCED MEDICAL CODING • Eligible for Financial AidPrerequisites: Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Physiology, Surgical Technology/Disease Processes, Pharmacology, CPT Coding and ICD-9-CM. Students will become familiar with insurance terminology and insurance claim form types. Intensive instruction will include various third-party payer programs, provisions for payment and various laws governing third-party payers such as Medicare, Medicaid and Worker's Compensation, HMO, etc. Managed care plans will be discussed with each third-party program. Students learn concepts in pre-certification and pre-authorizations, and receive instruction in both DRG and HCPCS coding systems for Medicare and Medicaid. Additional information, such as laboratory tests, drugs, diagnostic procedures and abbreviations will be integrated into course lectures, along with basic anatomy and physiology. This course is recommended for everyday practical use and for persons working in or seeking positions in a medical office/health environment, such as medical records and medical insurance. INSURANCE CODING, ICD-9-CM CODING AND CLASSIFICATION SYSTEMS • Eligible for Financial AidPrerequisites: Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Physiology for the insurance coder. This course provides skills and knowledge in the medical records field in ICD-9- coding of insurance forms for reimbursement of medical services. The student will identify different nomenclatures and classification systems; and assign codes using appropriate rules, principles, guidelines and conventions. INSURANCE CODING CPT • Eligible for Financial AidStudents learn to interpret various medical reports and records, such as operative reports; discharge summaries; and laboratory, radiology and pathology findings. Hands-on instruction will focus on the use of medical coding systems for coding procedures, evaluation and management, anesthesia, medicine, laboratory procedures, etc. Using the CPT Code Book, and coding systems students will practice coding evaluations and management,for anesthesia, radiology, pathology and surgical procedures of various body systems, laboratory procedures, medicine and the proper use of CPT/HCPCS modifiers. Students perform exercises designed to identify international diagnosis codes and CPT Level I and Level II modifiers for all body structures and systems. No state or national requirements currently exist for eligibility or licensure in the medical records coding/claims processing professions. A national test by AHIMA, the Certified Coding Specialist, CCS, is offered, and a national test by the AAPC, the Certified Professional Coder, CPC, is offered as well, but neither exam is an entry-level requirement. Nurse Aide CertificationNURSE AIDE CERTIFICATION • Eligible for Financial AidPrerequisites: Prior to registration students must pick up a registration packet at the Workforce and Continuing Education Division Office in the Student Services Center, Building S, Room S022, at Brookhaven College’s main campus. Prepare for the nurse aide certification examination with this course addressing both written and clinical skills required for those that are or plan to be long-term-care nursing assistants. Successful completion of this course is a prerequisite to taking the state exam for certification to work as a nurse aide. The course content encompasses 88 hours of instruction, 60 hours of lecture and lab, four hours of makeup/remedial and 24 hours of clinical practice. Students do not need previous nursing home experience or to be currently employed to take this course. Financial aid is available to those who qualify. Patient Care Technician ProgramThese courses prepare a student to work as an entry-level patient care technician in a clinic, hospital, nursing home or long-term care facility. Students enrolled in these courses will learn to perform basic laboratory procedures and electrocardiograms, check vital signs, assist in medical examinations and how to perform, and gain experience in phlebotomy. This program is a combination of lecture and practical exercises in the medical laboratory, with real-world experience gained during the externship portion of training. Externships are conducted at off-campus medical facilities. Upon successful completion of Patient Care Technician One, Patient Care Technician Clinical and Patient Care Technician Two, the student is eligible to take the State of Texas Nurse's Aide Certification exam as well as the National Health Career Association's Certification exams for EKG and Phlebotomy. Pharmacy Technician CertificationPHARMACY TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION PROGRAM • Eligible for Financial AidPrerequisites: High school diploma or GED This comprehensive 50-hour course will prepare students to enter the pharmacy field and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board, PTCB, exam. Pharmacy technicians work in hospitals, home infusion pharmacies, community pharmacies and other health care settings, working under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. Course content includes medical terminology specific to the pharmacy, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Students will learn dosage calculations, I.V. flow rates, drug compounding, dose conversions, prescription dispensation, inventory control, billing and reimbursement. Financial aid is available. PhlebotomyThe 90-hour Phlebotomy Technician Program prepares professionals to collect blood specimens from clients for laboratory analysis. Students will become familiar with all aspects of blood collection and develop comprehensive skills to perform venipunctures competently and safely. Classroom work includes terminology; anatomy; physiology; blood collection procedures; specimen hands-on practice; and, clinical training in skills and techniques to perform puncture methods. The program also includes lab exercises. Students will work with a training arm and other exercises intended to prepare them to function as entry-level phlebotomy technicians. The curriculum is designed to provide the educational information and competencies required by the American Society for Clinical Pathology, ASCP, for certification as a Phlebotomy Technician. PHLEBOTOMIST-CLINICAL • Eligible for Financial AidPrerequisites: Students must successfully complete the Phlebotomy Technician Course offered by Brookhaven College and have had three doses of Hepatitis B Vaccine prior to registering in this class. A criminal background and drug screening will be required for entry into this class. This course provides a work-based learning experience enabling students to apply specialized occupational theory, skills and concepts. A clinical professional provides direct supervision. This course serves as the required clinical component for becoming a Certified Phlebotomy Technician as established by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, ASCP. Students will be assigned to a clinical laboratory for 100 contact hours to practice and must demonstrate proficiency in the skills of venipuncture and capillary puncture. Clinical hours are scheduled with the instructor, according to the student’s needs and may be completed in as little as one month or as many as 16 weeks. Enrollment is limited.
Physical TherapyPHYSICAL THERAPY AIDE • Eligible for Financial AidA physical therapy aide is responsible for keeping the treatment area clean and organized and for preparing for each patient's therapy. Components of treatment procedures performed by these workers, under the direction and supervision of physical therapist, involve exercises, massages, electrical stimulation, paraffin baths, hot and cold packs, traction and ultrasound. Physical therapy aides record the patient's responses to treatment and report the outcome of each treatment to the physical therapist. The duties of aides also include some clerical tasks.
