HEALTH CARE CAREERSLook for courses eligible for Financial Aid highlighted in green. *Important Information for Students Entering a Health Care Career Program Students interested in a Health Care Career program should register in person at Brookhaven College to ensure that they have received all the necessary information for their success in the program. Students should come to the Corporate and Continuing Education Division Office in the Student Services Center, Building S, Room S022, at Brookhaven College’s main campus, 3939 Valley View Lane, Farmers Branch. Some courses involving a clinical experience require a background check and drug-screening test. Students undergo a criminal background check and drug testing prior to beginning their clinical experience. Students who do not pass both the criminal background check and drug test will not be allowed to continue on to components. Students will receive specific directions at the time of registration concerning how these checks should be performed. These checks must be completed no more than 30 days before the start of the clinical experience. For any course with a clinical component, students need to receive the following immunizations prior to registration. Brookhaven College will require a copy of proof of immunization for Hepatitis B series of vaccines-The first and second dose are required before registering in the first course. The third dose is required before registering in the clinical component. PPD tuberculin test-The test must be less than six months old. If students had a previous positive PPD test, documentation or history of treatment is required. Some of the health career courses with a clinical component will require the purchase of liability insurance. The cost for the fall semester is $18.13, spring semester is $11 and summer semester is $5. Dental AssistingDENTAL ASSISTING • Eligible for Financial AidPrerequisites: Ability to read English at 12-grade level. High School diploma or GED. The Dental Assisting Program is designed to prepare the student to function effectively as an integral member of the dental health care team. Stimulating, fast paced instruction relies heavily on students participation. Course provides classroom instruction and basic clinical assisting skills. During the ten weeks of training, students will learn dental theory and terminology, the techniques of four-handed chairside procedures, exposing and processing dental radiographs or x-rays including an introduction to digital and panoramic radiology. Instruction also covers infection control standards, obtaining impressions of the oral cavity for the fabrication of study models and custom trays used for vital bleaching procedures, preparing dental material, fabrication of provisional coverage. Students will spend time assisting and observing in a participating dental office. The Dental Assisting Program prepares students for the Texas Certification in Radiology, Infection Control and Jurisprudence. One-time tuition covers instruction, materials, textbook and dental supplies and equipment. The first session is held at Collin County Community College, Courtyard Center, 4800 Preston Park Boulevard in Plano. Clinical labs are conducted at Dental Careers Foundation.
ElectrocardiographyEKG technicians are responsible for performing diagnostic tests to monitor and record the heart rhythm and rate in patients. These tests include basic EKGs, Holter monitoring, 12 lead placement and stress tests. Our comprehensive electrocardiography program prepares students to take the American Society of Phlebotomy Technician, ASPT- Electrocardiograph, EKG, Technician exam and to function as EKG technicians. EKG TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION • Eligible for Financial AidThis course will include important practice and background information on anatomy and physiology of the heart, medical disease processes, medical terminology and ethics, legal aspects of patient contact, the Holter monitor, electrocardiography and echocardiography. The program includes a graded final exam to help prepare students for the ASPT-EKG Technician exam.
EMTs and ParamedicsBrookhaven College is proud to offer the National Registry examination. The National Registry has been an influential organization, certifying paramedics, for over twenty years. The Registry examination process acts as a viable instrument, measuring the skills and competencies necessary to deliver quality Advanced and Basic Life Support. Brookhaven College is offering the examination in hopes that conscientious Emergency Medical Technicians will take this opportunity to measure their greater commitment to emergency care. BASIC CARDIAC LIFE SUPPORT/HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS • Eligible for Financial AidThis basic CPR course teaches adult, child and infant, one-rescuer CPR and foreign body airway obstruction; adult two-rescuer CPR; and mouth-to-mask/bag-valve-mask, BVM, ventilation. A completion card is issued upon passing a written evaluation and skills performance.
ACLS-FAST TRACK • Eligible for Financial AidPrerequisites: BCLS completion card. Recommended the two day course once. This course teaches skills development for professional personnel practicing in critical care units, emergency departments and paramedic ambulances. The instruction establishes a system of protocols for management of the patient experiencing cardiac difficulties. Course consists of lectures, small group presentations and medical application of skills. Students will be evaluated on how they perform in skill situations and must pass a written examination to gain licensure from the American Heart Association.

Medical Administrative Assistant ProgramThe 50-hour Medical Administrative Assistant Program prepares professionals to function effectively in many of the administrative and clerical positions in the health care industry. This program covers important background information on medical terminology, insurance billing and coding, medical ethics, customer service and legal aspects. MEDICAL ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT PROGRAM • Eligible for Financial AidPrerequisites: High School diploma or GED This program is designed to prepare students to handle the day-to-day functions in a medical office. Students will learn medical office procedures including appointment scheduling, medical records creation and maintenance, phone communications, financial processes, insurance coding, billing, third party reimbursement, credit arrangements and computer use in the medical office.
Medical Laboratory TechnologyThe 90-hour Phlebotomy Technician Program prepares professionals to collect blood specimens from clients for laboratory analysis. Students will become familiar with all aspects of blood collection and develop comprehensive skills to perform venipunctures competently and safely. Classroom work includes terminology; anatomy; physiology; blood collection procedures; specimen hands-on practice; and, clinical training in skills and techniques to perform puncture methods. The program also includes lab exercises. Students will work with a training arm and other exercises intended to prepare them to function as entry-level phlebotomy technicians. The curriculum is designed to provide the educational information and competencies required by the American Society for Clinical Pathology, ASCP, for certification as a Phlebotomy Technician. PHLEBOTOMY TECHNICIAN • Eligible for Financial AidPrerequisites: Completion of health records, including current immunizations and tuberculosis test, high school diploma or the equivalent, GED. Students will develop skills in a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and universal precautions. Techniques include vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin puncture, butterfly needles and blood culture and specimen collection from adults, children and infants. The course emphasizes infection prevention, proper patient identification, labeling of specimens and quality assurance, specimen handling, processing and accessioning. PHLEBOTOMIST-CLINICAL • Eligible for Financial AidPrerequisites: Students must successfully complete the Phlebotomy Technician Course offered by Brookhaven College and have had three doses of Hepatitis B Vaccine prior to registering in this class. A criminal background and drug screening will be required for entry into this class. This course provides a work-based learning experience enabling students to apply specialized occupational theory, skills and concepts. A clinical professional provides direct supervision. This course serves as the required clinical component for becoming a Certified Phlebotomy Technician as established by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, ASCP. Students will be assigned to a clinical laboratory for 100 contact hours to practice and must demonstrate proficiency in the skills of venipuncture and capillary puncture. Clinical hours are scheduled with the instructor, according to the student’s needs and may be completed in as little as one month or as many as 16 weeks. Enrollment is limited.
Medical Records Coding and Claims TechnicianCoding professionals are specialists skilled in classifying medical data from patient records. Coding practitioners review patient records and assign numerical codes for each diagnosis and procedure. Coders must possess expertise in: Medical Terminology, 48 hours; Anatomy and Physiology for the Insurance Coder, 48 hours; Pharmacology for Insurance Coding, 48 hours; Surgical Technology/Disease Processes, 48 hours; CPT Coding I, 40 hours; ICD-9-CM Coding , 48 hours; and Insurance Claims Processing, 42 hours. MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY • Eligible for Financial AidStudents will begin to understand medical terminology through investigating the prefixes, suffixes and root words commonly used in forming the medical vocabulary. Additional information, such as laboratory tests, drugs, diagnostic procedures and abbreviations will be integrated into course lectures, along with basic anatomy and physiology. Competency will be tested. This course is recommended for everyday practical use and for persons working in or seeking positions in a medical office/health environment, such as medical records and medical insurance. INSURANCE CLAIMS PROCESSING ADVANCED MEDICAL CODING • Eligible for Financial AidPrerequisites: Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Physiology, Surgical Technology/Disease Processes, Pharmacology, CPT Coding and ICD-9-CM. Students will become familiar with insurance terminology and insurance claim form types. Intensive instruction will include various third-party payer programs, provisions for payment and various laws governing third-party payers such as Medicare, Medicaid and Worker's Compensation, HMO, etc. Managed care plans will be discussed with each third-party program. Students learn concepts in pre-certification and pre-authorizations, and receive instruction in both DRG and HCPCS coding systems for Medicare and Medicaid. ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY FOR THE INSURANCE CODER • Eligible for Financial AidBasic normal human anatomy and physiology of cells, tissues, organs, and systems, with an overview of common pathophysiology is the focus of this course. Students will identify and correlate cells, tissues, organs, and systems of the human body; differentiate normal from abnormal structure and function; and identify all body systems, their organs, and relevant pathophysiology. INSURANCE CODING CPT • Eligible for Financial AidStudents learn to interpret various medical reports and records, such as operative reports; discharge summaries; and laboratory, radiology and pathology findings. Hands-on instruction will focus on the use of medical coding systems for coding procedures, evaluation and management, anesthesia, medicine, laboratory procedures, etc. Using the CPT Code Book, and coding systems students will practice coding evaluations and management,for anesthesia, radiology, pathology and surgical procedures of various body systems, laboratory procedures, medicine and the proper use of CPT/HCPCS modifiers. This course provides skills and knowledge in the medical records field for ICD-9 coding of insurance forms for reimbursement of medical services.The student will identify different nomenclatures and classification systems; and assign codes using appropriate rules, principles, guidelines, and conventions.

Successful completion of this course is a prerequisite to taking the state exam for certification to work as a nurse aide. The course content encompasses 88 hours of instruction, 60 hours of lecture and lab, four hours of makeup/remedial and 24 hours of clinical practice. Pharmacy Technician CertificationPHARMACY TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION PROGRAM • Eligible for Financial AidPrerequisites: High school diploma or GED This comprehensive 50-hour course will prepare students to enter the pharmacy field and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board, PTCB, exam. Pharmacy technicians work in hospitals, home infusion pharmacies, community pharmacies and other health care settings, working under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. Course content includes medical terminology specific to the pharmacy, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Students will learn dosage calculations, I.V. flow rates, drug compounding, dose conversions, prescription dispensation, inventory control, billing and reimbursement. Financial aid is available. Vision CareOPTICIAN TRAINING • Eligible for Financial AidThis course prepares the student for a rewarding career in the vision care industry and also is for those who are working in the industry who wish to prepare for the American Board of Opticianry National Exam. The course will cover anatomy and physiology of the eye, basic optics, lens form analysis, lens materials, coatings, multifocal designs, ophthalmic frames, instrumentation and regulation standards. Students also will learn basic sales, frame styling techniques and insurance billing. The program includes work at externship sites where students can get hands on experience. An optician would be employed by private ophthalmologists, optometrists, optical stores or corporate opticals such as Pearl Vision, Sears Opticals, etc. Externships will be at optical stores, and must be scheduled with instructor.
