Career DevelopmentCAREER TESTING AND COUNSELINGIndividuals who are looking for an opportunity to find the right career can enroll in this course and get one-to-one counseling with career professionals in the Brookhaven College Career Development Center. Students will take the Strong Interest Inventory and the Myers Briggs Type Indicator tests and review the results with a career counselor. In addition, students will have two one-hour sessions with a career counselor that may include resume and job search assistance. Career guidance programs such as Choices, Discover and Sigi+, the DCCCD Job Bank and the Career Resource Library are also available. Students may register and begin these services at any time during the term. Creative WritingCREATIVE WRITING: DEVELOPING YOUR CHARACTERThis course is sure to help you develop character (or characters). This hands-on workshop will explore ways to you can expose your most unforgettable character to the world. We will examine different genres of writing and the styles common to each, narrative voice, methods for enriching language, metaphors and similes, and introduce you to the workshop method used in prestigious creative writing programs across the nation.

HealthFIVE KEYS OF HEARING LOSSThese seminars are for those experiencing the beginning of a hearing loss or those who are adjusting to wearing a hearing aid. The instructor is Esther Kelly, hearing loss research specialist for Texas. July 12: Coping Strategies for Living with Hearing Loss This session will include a free video titled "You Should Hear What You Are Missing." July 19: Technology for Living with Hearing Loss Learn about assistive listening devices, hearing aids and new technology. July 26: Creative Communication Learn lip-reading skills, sign-signals and other ways to communicate in noisy situations.
Home and GardenHome and Garden SURVEY OF AMERICAN ANTIQUESUsing authentic antiques as hands-on teaching tools, students will gain insight into building and authenticating collections of 18th and 19th century American furniture, folk art and decorative accessories, along with invaluable tips and trade secrets used by professionals. For the final class meeting we will have our own “Antiques Roadshow” with an appraisal fair to evaluate pieces belonging to class members. The instructor is Donald King Cowan, antiques dealer and Accredited Member of the International Society of Appraisers. Nonprofit Management Certificate ProgramCourses are offered in cooperation with the Center For Nonprofit Management. An intensive, professional development program for staff and leadership of advocacy, social service, community, faith-based and other organizations, emphasizing basic principles and best practices, with a strong emphasis on planning. Courses can be taken in any order, although Nonprofit Organizations is recommended as the first course. A student can take one course or take all seven in a year to earn the Nonprofit Management Certificate. Continuing Education Units, CEUs, are awarded for each course. All seven will be offered during the fall, spring, and summer terms. Lunch and text are included in the tuition. PORTRAIT DRAWINGThe human face is quite fascinating and expressive, with emotional nuances that constantly present new challenges to the artist seeking to capture its form and detail. The possibilities are endless and students enrolled in this course may discover that there’s nothing more exciting than this subject. For those fascinated by people, the human face is the ultimate subject. Study includes demonstrations and, while we will work primarily from photographs, there may be some opportunity for drawing live subjects. Jewelry MakingJEWELRY MAKING, BEGINNINGA beautiful piece of jewelry can inspire the desire to create. Take this course and practice designing jewelry to wear, give as gifts or to sell. In this course, students will discover how to design, texture, saw, file, cold-connect, solder and polish. Students will be able to create pins, pendants, earrings, bracelets, and necklaces. This course is for every skill level. Supplies: At the first class meeting, students will need to bring a 100mm depth saw frame and two dozen 3/0 saw blades. PaintingMIXED MEDIALearn and use design principles and your personal imagery to create beautiful collage pieces. You will learn techniques for combining water media, both watercolor and acrylic, will be combined with oil pastel, colored pencil, recycled old drawings and paintings, photographic images and found or prepared papers. The course is designed to stimulate your imagination and produce new ideas. Supplies: The instructor will hand out a supply list at the first class meeting. Bring whatever art supplies, if any, you already have to the first class.
PAINTING: OIL OR ACRYLICChoose from oil or acrylic and learn a wide variety of technical and conceptual areas, including still-life, landscape, portraiture and abstraction. This is a great one-on-one course with lots of individual attention. Beginners to advanced painters are welcome. Supplies: The course supply list is available at first class meeting, but bring whatever art supplies you already have to the first class.
DanceCOUNTRY WESTERN, LINE, AND TEJANO DANCE, BEGINNINGFor those who enjoy country music but don't dance, this course starts with basic lines dances such as the Cotton-Eyed Joe, the Schottische and the Freeze. Then we will do the basics of the Two-Step, Double-Two, and Tejano. We'll also learn the basics of leading and following, done to the tempos of both traditional and contemporary country music. Note: No partner necessary.
LATIN RHYTHMS DANCELatin dance teaches the fiery steps of the Cha-Cha, Rumba, Merengue, Samba, Bolero and Tango. This course will provide the right foundation to add a Latin beat to evenings out. It is sultry, sensuous, fun and full of flair. It's easier than it looks and that's the magic. Note: No partner necessary.
STRICTLY SWING DANCETap your feet to the single, double and triple time tempos of the 30s, 40s and 50s. Try your hand at lindy timing and practice the upbeat tempos of the East Coast Swing and Jitterbug. This course will begin with the basics and advance to fun and footloose skills like the sweetheart, pretzel, tuck turns and free spin turns. You’ll learn to the big band music as well as the up-tempo, retro music of the 90’s and new millennium.
