Career DevelopmentCAREER TESTING AND COUNSELINGIndividuals who are looking for an opportunity to find the right career can enroll in this course and get one-to-one counseling with career professionals in the Brookhaven College Career Development Center. Students will take the Strong Interest Inventory and the Myers Briggs Type Indicator tests and review the results with a career counselor. In addition, students will have two one-hour sessions with a career counselor that may include resume and job search assistance. Career guidance programs such as Choices, Discover and Sigi+, the DCCCD Job Bank and the Career Resource Library are also available. Students may register and begin these services at any time during the term. MONDAY AFTERNOON LECTURE SERIESFeb. 8: Dallas Air Quality Air quality is a major environmental health issue for Dallas. Dallas is located in the nine county non-attainment area, a region in which the air quality monitors do not meet federal air quality standards for a criteria pollutant, ozone. Dallas is addressing poor air quality through its green fleet, environmental ordinances, renewable energy and recycling programs. Join Nicole Cooper from the City of Dallas to learn more about environmental initiatives. Feb. 15: North Texas Master Naturalist Often it is the passion of volunteers that encourages change. Texas is fortunate to have a statewide program that trains volunteers to provide education and outreach in a wide variety of natural resource conservation efforts. Find out who your Texas Master Naturalists are and how these volunteers are bringing the green to Dallas. Feb. 22: North Texas Water Issues This lecture will examine our sources for water in North Texas: rain, ground and surface. Learn about issues of contamination affecting water in aquifers and who controls and monitors water quality in the lakes and reservoirs that supply Dallas water. Presented by Robin Sowton, Dallas Sierra Club. March 1: Home Energy Improvement This lecture will offer information about how to make your home more energy efficient. Learn how to choose an electricity provider, make a decision about the purchase of new appliances, install more attic installation and schedule a test in your home to specifically measure energy loss. Nonprofit Management Certificate ProgramCourses are offered in cooperation with the Center For Nonprofit Management. An intensive, professional development program for staff and leadership of advocacy, social service, community, faith-based and other organizations, emphasizing basic principles and best practices, with a strong emphasis on planning. Courses can be taken in any order, although Nonprofit Organizations is recommended as the first course. A student can take one course or take all seven in a year to earn the Nonprofit Management Certificate. Continuing Education Units, CEUs, are awarded for each course. All seven will be offered during the fall, spring, and summer terms. Lunch and text are included in the tuition. PORTRAIT DRAWINGThe human face is quite fascinating and expressive, with emotional nuances that constantly present new challenges to the artist seeking to capture its form and detail. The possibilities are endless and students enrolled in this course may discover that there’s nothing more exciting than this subject. For those fascinated by people, the human face is the ultimate subject. Study includes demonstrations and, while we will work primarily from photographs, there may be some opportunity for drawing live subjects. PaintingOIL PAINTINGFrom amateur to professional, anyone can discover the beauty of working with oils. You will study visual expression and styles; explore subjects, perspective and design; and learn how to begin. Part of the course will look at the variety of mediums, materials and various painting surfaces available. Supplies: At the first class meeting, students will need to bring a primed 8" x 10" surface, either, pre-made or canvas board (ex. Fredrix, Masterpiece); a pencil; an eraser; a 11" x 14" sketchbook and painting ideas, which can be reproductions from books, periodicals or catalogs. Additional supplies are required for this course; the instructor will hand out a supply list at the first class meeting.
DanceSTRICTLY SWING DANCETap your feet to the single, double and triple time tempos of the 30s, 40s and 50s. Try your hand at lindy timing and practice the upbeat tempos of the East Coast Swing and Jitterbug. This course will begin with the basics and advance to fun and footloose skills like the sweetheart, pretzel, tuck turns and free spin turns. You’ll learn to the big band music as well as the up-tempo, retro music of the 90’s and new millennium.
COUNTRY WESTERN, LINE, AND TEJANO DANCE, BEGINNINGFor those who enjoy country music but don't dance, this course starts with basic lines dances such as the Cotton-Eyed Joe, the Schottische and the Freeze. Then we will do the basics of the Two-Step, Double-Two, and Tejano. We'll also learn the basics of leading and following, done to the tempos of both traditional and contemporary country music. Note: No partner necessary.
LATIN RHYTHMS DANCELatin dance teaches the fiery steps of the Cha-Cha, Rumba, Merengue, Samba, Bolero and Tango. This course will provide the right foundation to add a Latin beat to evenings out. It is sultry, sensuous, fun and full of flair. It's easier than it looks and that's the magic. Note: No partner necessary.
