Editors, with the advent of the Internet, are looking for stories between 300 and 1,000 words long that can be more easily read on a computer screen. Called “flash fiction,” this new genre of writing is usually a story that focuses on a single act, the culmination of several unwritten events. Join us and learn the technique of writing tight and writing fast–the essence of flash fiction–in a workshop setting.

From first inspiration to finished product, come explore the creative process of poetry writing! First-time writers and local working poets alike are encouraged to enroll in this workshop-oriented course, which will review forms and styles of poetry; examine the meter and rhythm of modern and ancient verse; investigate the transgressive nature of writing masterly poetry; and impart tested methods of inspiring personal creativity. Students will have many opportunities to express themselves on the page through a series of peer-reviewed poetry readings in the classroom. This course also will discuss methods of publishing well-polished poetry and ways to forge the connections and garner the resources necessary to become a working poet.

For all aspiring writers or those students who just want to explore the possibility of putting their thoughts into words, this hands-on workshop will explore ways to ignite your creativity. We will examine different genres of writing and the styles common to each, narrative voice, ways to enrich language, metaphors and similes, and introduce you to the workshop method used in prestigious creative writing programs across the nation. At the end of the week, we will have produced an online newsletter in the Mac lab to showcase all our writing. Campers will conduct interviews, take photos, work collaboratively to design layout and decide on stories for the newsletter.
