The Dallas Metroplex is one of the fastest growing high tech centers in the U.S., which means there are growing opportunities for good technical writers. Technical writing is a field that encompasses much more than computer material, and the style is very different from other types of writing. This course will give the technical writing newcomer A-Z lessons in technical writing. This training provides hands-on exercises to enable you to understand how to use voice, language, grammar, format, and style; and how to tailor your technical writing to fit a specific layout or structure. Discover how to gather material from existing documents and subject matter experts to incorporate into new documents, how to understand your editor, how documents are translated into other languages, and how to ensure that your document is translated correctly. Finally, you’ll be introduced to the technical writing software on the market and you’ll have all the information you need to take on technical writing projects.

This course is designed to introduce the theory and practice behind writing business documents. Students will develop their skills in writing business messages by learning about the communication process itself. The student will prepare, organize, write and revise business communications, including letters, memos and e-mail correspondence.

There is much more to grant writing than the writing, as you will learn from an experienced grant writer who has worked with dozens of different nonprofit organizations in a variety of positions. Most of the real work happens before you begin writing. You will learn how to perform research to find potential foundation and corporate grants, determine the right match and amount to "ask for," include the right information in a proposal and organize and write a proposal. You also will get general insight into avoiding the clichés that grant-readers hate. By practicing your research and writing techniques, you will have written a complete grant proposal by the end of class. This course does not include government grant writing.

For all aspiring writers or those students who just want to explore the possibility of putting their thoughts into words, this hands-on workshop will explore ways to ignite your creativity. We will examine different genres of writing and the styles common to each, narrative voice, ways to enrich language, metaphors and similes, and introduce you to the workshop method used in prestigious creative writing programs across the nation. Come prepared to write! There is nothing like a writers group to inspire your creativity.

If you've taken our Creative Writing course or an Introduction to Creative Writing on any campus, you are welcome to take the next step to learn and exercise deeper development of characters, plot, dialogue, narration, structure, voice, setting and your favorite genre. You also will learn the importance of editing and rewrites, valuable exercises to cure writers block, and share your work with your writing colleagues using the workshop method.

In this course, we will study the intersection between yoga and creative writing. Using yoga exercises for the first half of each session moves us from the inner to the outer body, giving us the freedom to write our personal narratives in the second half of each session. Karen X is a registered yoga instructor, certified at the 200 and 500 hour levels. She was an apprentice of the late poet, Allen Ginsberg, and she is the producer of the Performance Collective, Dharma Broads, as well as being the author and events curator for WordSpace.

Using the same approach incorporating yoga and writing, this course builds upon the work developed in Body Text I, moving it into generating performance work. We will help you discover your inner child by teaching you what it takes to write for children, the types of children’s literature, and why children’s literature is different. You also will receive tips from a published children’s author on ways to find inspiration, what to do if you’re not an illustrator and need one, how to market your work, and how to make connections with the Dallas writers’ community. Feel free to bring story ideas, illustrations, and/or draft manuscripts and be prepared for plenty of hands-on experience.
