Be anyone you want to be and go anywhere you want to go—writing and using a computer. Whether you love poetry or fiction, you will learn to balance the narrative and lyrical; to increase figurative content; and to discover tricks for effective word choice. We also will appeal to the emerging writer in each student by covering topics like poetic forms, editing drafts and submitting for publication. Each session will include a supportive and encouraging opportunity for the students to share what they have written in the same format used in college creative writing programs. At the same time, students will learn the basics of using computers to illustrate and illuminate their writing. Want to be part of your school’s yearbook, newspaper, blog or Web site? JOURNALISM FOR INQUIRING MINDS, AGES 11-14Ever thought about becoming a reporter? Think writing is fun and want to learn more about journalism? If so, then come join us for a week-long program where we will explore the five components necessary for news stories, basic principles for design layout and effective interviewing techniques, as well as how to tell a story in photos. At the end of the week, we will have produced an online newsletter in the Mac lab to showcase all our writing. Campers will conduct interviews, take photos, work collaboratively to design layout and decide on stories for the newsletter.
ADVERTISING: THE ART OF PERSUASIVE WRITING, AGES 11-14Like those ads you see on TV and in magazines? Do you have the gift of gab and want to learn how to use it to your advantage? This summer camp session is all about learning to write persuasive ad copy, press releases, and the basics of good ad design. We will create several print ads, a broadcast storyboard, and a press release - all the components for advertising a creative first portfolio.

CREATING WEB PAGES USING DREAMWEAVER, AGES 11-17Do you want to learn to be a master of the Web? Get started with Dreamweaver. You can learn to create and modify pages to fit your own style. From tables to templates, you can build in styles, links and images and upload your Web site to test. You will even try out the HTML built-in editor to inspect the code and add your own HTML, insert Flash and Shockwave movies. Supplies: Students are required to bring a two or more GB flash drive to each meeting.
CREATING COMIC GRAPHICS USING ILLUSTRATOR, AGES 11-17You can learn to use this illustration tool to create your own graphics for comics. Adobe Illustrator gives you the ability to create, color and transform objects. The program lets users blend shapes and colors, layer and order objects and even add 3-D effects. The class offers you the chance to learn to use all the flexibility and power of Illustrator to bring your ideas to life. Supplies: Students are required to bring a two or more GB flash drive to each meeting.
IMOVIE, AGES 11-17iMovie is the fastest and easiest way to turn home movies into dazzling Hollywood-style hits. iMovie comes complete with a sound studio built in. You will learn to use these cinematic tools to create major effects and riveting performances. Supplies: Students are required to bring a two or more GB flash drive to each meeting.
DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY USING PHOTOSHOP, AGES 11-17You will learn what digital photography is and how photography evolved to this exciting new level. You will have an opportunity to really learn about the different features available on digital cameras and find out what to look for both inside and outside the camera. Supplies: Students are required to bring to each class meeting a digital camera; a three or more GB flash drive; two writable CDs; and a usable media card. It also is beneficial for students to bring an extra digital camera battery.
Cooking and Culinary ArtJUNIOR CHEF, AGES 11 - 17Cooking can be fun for children of all ages. By experimenting with a variety of foods, students will discover how to prepare healthy meals, snacks and even desserts! Students also will enjoy using their own creativity to put together a recipe book.
BAKING BASICS, AGES 11-17Learn the basics of baking, and how to use an oven! Learn how to measure and mix ingredients and how to follow a recipe. You will make biscuits, cookies, pies, and cakes, and have a recipe cook-off judged by their parents on the final day!
CAKE DECORATING, BEGINNING, AGES 11-17Discover a new way to add excitement to your cakes and cupcakes. This course will help you learn the basics of decorating with icing, creating borders and writing on cakes. You will see how rewarding it is to create desserts to share with your family and friends.
CAKE DECORATING, ADVANCED, AGES 11-17Prerequisites: Cake Decorating, Beginning course is recommended. Review the basics and then move to a new dimension of cake decorating. Learn to shape and tier cakes, make butter cream and royal icing, and work with fondant and gum paste to create works of edible art. Plus, take your projects home to share with family and friends.
CUISINES AROUND THE WORLD, AGES 11-17Come take a culinary journey around the World! This course includes a little of everything. Each class meeting will focus on different cuisines and menus from selected regions of the world.
CraftsINTRODUCTION TO SEWING, AGES 10-17From the basics of a sewing machine to basic hand sewing techniques, you’ll be introduced to sewing in this exciting class. You can even try your hand with an embroidery machine. Throughout the class, you’ll have the chance to construct a tote bag, backpack or a stuffed animal. Students also will learn how to sew on buttons, hem a pair of pants and put on patches. Supplies: There will be an additional $10 cost for materials, which will be collected in class.
INTERMEDIATE SEWING, AGES 10-17Prerequisites: Introduction to Sewing or instructor approval. For those who want to learn more about sewing, this course will teach you about basic apparel construction. Learn to construct pajama pants, add initials to a pillow, use hand appliqué techniques and make a Crazy Quilt. Supplies: There will be an additional $10 cost for materials, which will be collected in class.
Personal EnrichmentME AND MY MONEY, AGES 10-17Managing your money takes some simple know-how. Learn the basics of managing your money, including how to create a budget and make a savings plan, so you can reach your dollar goal. You will learn about comparing prices, opening a checking account, writing checks and keeping a check register. Students will participate in a scenario game throughout the week where they must secure a job, apartment and transportation in an assigned city and with a given budget.
CAREER EXPLORATION, AGES 14-17You are almost headed to college, and must begin to make important decisions-one of which is choosing a career. It is important that you begin to think about a career path to college because it will help you select the right college that specializes in your career, and while you are still in high school, you can begin to focus on those classes that are required to fulfill your career goals. We will teach and learn basic career development planning skills, your strength, weaknesses, and your potential fit for a particular career. Students will learn about the importance of careers, and also learn the basic steps and techniques for preparing for and having a successful career and balanced life.
NAVIGATION TO MIDDLE SCHOOL, AGES 10-13Gain the confidence and skills to master the challenges and changes of middle school with confidence. During this workshop, you will learn conflict management techniques, strategies for handling peer pressure, valuable study skills, and effective ways to communicate with your teachers and/or school counselor. In addition, participants will explore different career options based on their interests, talents and desires.
CHARACTER BUILDING FOR SUCCESS, AGES 10-13Do you know the proper manners to use in public? How can you show respect to adults, family and friends? We’ll use role-playing and discussions to uncover the connections between protocol and respect for your personal space and for others. We will work together to improve your knowledge of how to use proper social and business etiquette. Trustworthiness, integrity, honesty, responsibility and respect are some of the personal characteristics we will cover. You will learn how your behavior and the decisions you make form the core of your character.
MIND YOUR MANNERS, AGES 10-17Gain an introduction to basic etiquette skills, including table settings, ordering from a menu, holding appropriate table conversation and more! You will learn the proper way to address adults; create formal and informal invitations; review casual, business casual and formal attire; and write thank you letters.
ScienceGEOSCIENCE MANIA, AGES 10-13Do you love the planet you live on? Do you want to learn more about it and how to keep it clean and safe? Have you ever wondered how so many people, plants and animals can survive on such a diverse planet? Would you like to hunt for hidden treasure using cutting-edge technology? If you answered “yes!” to any of these questions, come join our class, and remember—it’s not just about rocks anymore.
THE SCIENCE OF COOKING, AGES 10-13Have you ever wondered how whipped cream stays fluffy? How French fries get crispy? Or can you blame the burnt cookies on the cookie sheet? Find out the answer to these questions and more in this week-long adventure that combines cooking and science. The best part is that the experiments are eatable!
WHIMSICAL WEATHER, AGES 10-13Discover tornadoes, hurricanes, floods and tsunamis, oh my! Come and explore what causes these weather events, how to prepare for their coming, and how to deal with their aftermath. We’ll watch movies and view pictures of recent storms, make weather models in the lab, and take a field trip to a local news channel to meet an actual meteorologist.
COMIC BOOK ADVENTURE SCIENCE, AGES 10-13Do you love comic books and science? This course brings both together as you create a comic book with your own superhero based on the science experiments done in class. We’ll solve the dilemma of the six pack rings, how to make ice cream and create snow globes.
FANTASTIC FORENSICS, AGES 10-13You’ve seen the television shows with all of the initials like CSI or NCIS, and we can help you explore how they do the awesome science that puts the bad guys behind bars! We will show you how to dust for fingerprints, how to look for important clues that other people might miss, and how to solve the mystery of “Who-dun-it.” The week will conclude with a visit from a real-life forensic scientist!
CRAZY SCIENCE, AGES 10-13Want to feel like you could be that “mad scientist” pulling a switch on a dark, stormy night to make your creation come to life? You could, with a little crazy science training. We’ll make silly putty, launch rockets, create cool lava lamps and have a great time! We’ll even learn a little science while we’re at it!

You’ll learn the history of different art styles and be shown how to use artists’ methods in your own finished pieces. CARTOON CLINIC, AGES 7-12Learn the basic principles of creating cartoons from creating a storyboard to character portraits to build your personal comic book. At each class, you will have the chance to observe professional artist, VET, demonstrate step-by-step techniques in expression, movement, perspective, text and gesture drawing methods. Students should have some interest in drawing, as there will be lots of practice sketching. Young artists are welcome to bring in drawings and sketches for portfolio review. Supplies: The supply list will be discussed in detail at the first class meeting, but please bring the following to the first class: 2B, 3B, 8B and HB pencils; colored pencils; pencil sharpener; mat board; newsprint or scratch paper; rubber, kneading, plastic or art gum erasers; ruler and scissors.
Theater and ActingTHE SHOW MUST GO ON, AGES 8-12Have you always wanted to be in a play but didn’t know where to start? This camp concentrates on all the basic aspects of theater. You will have the opportunity to build your acting skills by exploring projection, character development and script work. You can discover how different techniques like improvisation, vocal and movement exercises, memorization methods and more, can sharpen impulse, imagination and teamwork! Each class member will perform a speaking role in a short play, as well as in several improvised skits written by the students themselves, and presented for an audience of family and friends at the end of the final class! No previous acting experience is necessary. Supplies: Please provide a snack and drink for your child to bring to class.

DanceHIP HOP, AGES 10-14The dance steps of today’s music videos are Hip Hop styles. Learn this fun form of street dance. Hip Hop courses are designed to teach coordination, strength, quickness, agility and endurance. The instructor, using radio-edited, Hip-Hop music, will choreograph dance routines that are geared to all skill levels.
