Students at Brookhaven College will have access to $75,000 in scholarship funds thanks to contributions from the Greater Texas Foundation. The foundation announced the multi-year grant to Brookhaven College to fund scholarships for Head Start parents whose children will enroll in the college's Head Start Center. A first of its kind partnership between Head Start of Greater Dallas and Brookhaven College will take shape into a Head Start childcare center on the college campus, scheduled to open in 2007. The foundation presented the college with an initial $25,000 for the scholarship program in April.

"The initiative that Brookhaven College is starting is a unique program designed to help parents with essential support services so their children will have an opportunity to succeed," stated Dr. John Moss, Chairman of the Greater Texas Foundation.
The facility will serve 142 preschool-aged children each year and offer comprehensive services that promote growth in nutrition, health, social skills, physical coordination, self-esteem and pre-reading and pre-math skills. Brookhaven College will provide extensive support services for parents including mentoring, career development and counseling, financial aid counseling, tutoring for college courses, and college success strategies.
"Brookhaven College exists to provide high quality education for area residents with a special emphasis on first-generation college students," said Dr. Mary A. Brumbach, vice-president for resource and economic development. "Providing scholarship support to Head Start parents will permit them to take full advantage of the wide array of career choices and support services available on the campus."
The Greater Texas Foundation has provided more than $3.5 million for scholarships, educational outreach, teacher certification programs, and community support to organizations and institutions of higher learning to assist them in removing barriers as Texans seek a higher education.
