The institute was developed out of a cooperative partnership with geotechnical professional societies, the local oil and gas community and Brookhaven College. In 1999, Dallas oilman and philanthropist Ellison Miles donated $3.5 million dollars to the Dallas County Community College District Foundation for the funding of the Ellison Miles Geotechnology Institute at Brookhaven College.
