Patty Holyfield Teaching Award
for Excellence in Geoscience Teaching in Grades 5-12

 

The Holyfield Award is given in honor of Ms. Patty Holyfield (1952-2002), whose unflagging devotion to the science and teaching of geology was an inspiration to all who knew her.

The award in the amount of $5,000, is awarded annually to a North Texas teacher who demonstrates creativity in science teaching, in grades 5-12. This is a cash prize awarded directly to the winning teacher, for personal use.

Teachers must be recommended to the EMGI to receive an application.

The winner will receive his or her cash award at the Dallas Geological Society Awards Luncheon June 12, 2007. That teacher also will become a candidate for the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, AAPG, Teacher of the Year Award for the AAPG Southwest Section. If chosen, they will compete for the national AAPG Teacher of the Year Award, awarded at the national AAPG Convention April 20-23, 2008 in San Antonio.

Deadline for recommended teacher candidates' submittal: Feb. 28, 2007

The Ellison Miles Geotechnology Institute will send the application to each recommended teacher electronically.

The teacher's submittal packet will be due by mail to the EMGI office no later than April 15.

The winner will be announced May 15, 2007.

Teachers' Qualifying Characteristics for Recommendation:

  1. Minimum of three years of full-time teaching experience
  2. Teaching should include, but is not limited to, geology and earth science concepts
  3. Currently teaching in an accredited public or private school in North Texas IN THE COUNTIES OF Collin, Denton, Rockwall, Dallas, Tarrant, Wise, Parker, Jack, Palo Pinto, Kaufman, Ellis or Johnson

Teacher Entry Guidelines

The teacher will be asked to provide:

  1. A cover sheet with applicant's contact information including school name, district, address, personal contact information including phone and e-mail, and original signature
  2. Teacher's philosophy: two pages; Philosophy and teaching methods (both pedagogy and content)
  3. A detailed description of the unit taught and how it fits into the science program (not more than three pages). Please do not submit ancillary materials.
  4. Two letters of recommendation, one page each
    • One letter must be from a colleague. The other letter must be from (in order of desirability) a student, a student's parent (5-7), or another colleague.
    • Letters must be submitted as part of the packet, in a sealed envelope, signed across the flap by the author.

The teacher must assemble the above materials and submit by mail as a package to:
